PAS Pumps

Looking for reasons why a PAS pump might fail. Mine did last night but as I was on the motorway I didn'y notice until I came off the slip road and tried to turn a corner.

It seems odd it just fails without warning. All the levels were and are good and there were no leaks.

I'm getting a new pump (and drivebelt because the PAS pump pulley is now out of line and munching its way though the belt) but I'm interested to know what might have caused the failure.

It could possibley be old age i guess, it looks like it might be the original.
