HELP! BATTERY DISCHARGING
« on: December 18, 2006, 09:47:33 »
Hi guys,
I've been having problems getting my battery to charge. I've been running 90 (2.5 D NA) and the battery seems to keep discharging. If I run the land rover with all the accesories on (ie. Headlights, Heater, Radio) it will run fine whilst the engine is running but as soon as i turn it off the battery hasent got enough kik in it to turn the starter motor hard enough to start the engine.
The battery is only a few weeks old so i'm convinced it is not that. The  battery light is not on on the dash so looks like the alternator is ok.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?
I've been informed it may be a corroded engine earth lead, not too sure where that is located though.... :?  Anyone know?
Any help would be great!
Cheers everyone.
Tom

HELP! BATTERY DISCHARGING

just because the battery is new dont count it out!

you need a multi meter set to 12v DC and with engine running (no headlights or accessories) on check the voltage of the battery. no leaving the multi meter connected turn on your accessories (full beam, top speed heaters, fogs front and rear, heated screen) check multi meter again. normal charge is around 13.5 - 14v and the alternator should try to stay at this level, if its dropping below 12 - 11v alternator has a problem. turn everything off and check again should level itself at 13.5 - 14v again.

if everything is ok there, get yourself a side lamp bulb

bend the terminals so they point away from the bulb, with the engine off remove the negative terminal and bridge the gap with the bulb

bad drawing but hopefully you get the idea, if the bulb glows quite bright then you have a drain somewhere on your vehicle and that needs to be investigated if its so very very very dim or not at all thats fine

check that the little brown and red afink   wire is onthe back on the alt as this is the warning light, if it aint connected or your warning light has gone, it leaves a open sercuiton the secondary (charge) coils, which in effect you get a flat battery
had it happen t me a few times
hope it makes sense
