got a simple question.

ive got a Defender 90 going to use it as a second car for green lanning pay and plays etc.  so not much road use, only driving to and from lanes..  maybe a few trips to the tip and B&Q when i need stuff, ive messed up my every day car enough doing them trips!

what tyres would you recommend sticking on 16/7 modular rims?

235 85 16 or 265 75 16

colway MTs or Insa turbo special tracks.

got no suspension mods yet.

help a new member please..   :lol:

(i have spent a few hours searching and reading the forum already on this subject)

Personally it all depends whether you can afford/are allowed a second set of cheap road/AT wheels+tyres for use on the road. I use cheap set AT which do for green laning.

If so then I would go for the more aggresive, directional tread tyres like Insa Turbo special tracks, Recip trail/3D etc.

If not and only one set of tyres for everything then a less aggresive MT like the colways would probably be a lot better to live with.

It depends how often and far you go to DIYs etc.

Well i will have a spare set of wheels cause im buying the modulars.  so could have a spare set of road tyres.

But really wont be using the landy for much else appart from offroad use.  suppose lanes and P&P's are anything between 15 - 100 mile away.

anyone used the colways in 265 width ?

I've got BFG Mud Terrain's on mine. They're bloody good off-road and pretty well behaved on the tarmac - I think they are 235 85 R16's but would need to check. If there is a better tyre for off-roading (assuming you don't do many miles on road) then I'd like to see it !!! Great all-rounders.

Mine have done about 25K miles and there's still loads of tread on em.

i have the special tracks in the 265 size & with a slight lift & offset wheels they touch the eyebrows when flexing the suspension,

they are however the biz offroad,
only thing id say is they are big for the size with them being remoulds

Personally i wouldn't lane on mega aggressive treads, i did a reccie on my Grizzlies last winter and they dig and make a mess imho.  The truck also ends up blathered with all the [!Expletive Deleted!] you kick up.

I'm a colway MT person myself after all i do run a set. And i have found that perfom just as a good as the Insa sahara's ( the macho pattern) so to me that says a lot.
the colway will take you to many a place, but if you demand to be that extreme the the ITST are a good tyre but you can say good bye to you diffs and halfshafts if you a little adventurous with your right foot. anyone i know running them are on 4 pin diffs with stronger shafts.
The colway will have far better road manners than the insa too for those road moments. and i'll ask the question. Would you think that having to rely on insa's to get you through a greenlane might you think that you might be better off not being there in the first place  :?  as those boots can do a lot of digging when they spin.

I'd vote for the Insa Turbo Special Tracks. They are great off road as Mike says and I've also been really impressed with them on-road. Don't get me wrong. they're not sports tyres by any means, but they are a helluva lot better than I expected them to be as they are a soft compound. The only downside I can see is that they may wear more quickly. They are an aggressive tyre so if you don't go carefully you will make a mess of the lanes but, to be fair, any tyre will make a mess if you drive like an idiot! Add in cost per corner (Cheviot4x4 had a good price if they've got any in) and they are a good deal. And they look good too!



I'm running 265 75R16's on my 90 and have no lift. They do rub on the arches and the arms on lock occasionally. I would add they are probably overkill for greenlanes but great for pay n plays and more extreme stuff. One more hint: Keep the windows closed when you're in the mud as they will throw golfball, even snowball, sized lumps of mud at you as my headlining is testament to!

Personally for your use i'd stick with a good MT rather than a lesser At or mroe agressive tread. I run BFG-MT's in 265/75 size without problem both on and off road - they behave flawlessly but they are market leaders for MT's, other cheaper copies might be almost as good off road but dont expect miracles from their road manners.

who can testify how hard i try lol still running the original diffs & shafts in the front & standard rear diffs n shafts just now

i'm running insa turbo special track  235/85/16 ,no lift (till this weekend,)on offset mach fives and standard axles/diffs ,and i rate these tyres as brill for the money,got mine from paddocks,five for about 350.00 delivered,,good value for money me thinks .....

i went for colway MTs in the end.  235 85 16 and a new set of modulars to go with them  :)

i did wonder if they will look big enough in the arches....  They have just been delivered to work so i put one at the side of my current tyres  :shock: they are about 4 inches bigger!!  i'll get a extra 2 inches under the diffs just by putting these on!! but the current tyres are only well worn 205 80 16 i think.

i'll go get my tracking done and stick them on and im good to go  :twisted:

running 235 85 r16 colway mud terrains can't fault them, nice and big and don't rub even without a lift, now i got a 2 inch lift and i think it looks brill.

Colway MT great great respect from people i know useing them.

Also GREENWAY MACHO have a Guy over my way uses them on his ever day work and lane LANDROVER sez they are great.

I am thinking of some simex MT as shown below . i have a set of 235x85x16  newish HD springs no llift fit a 90 like a glove. mine are Wild Contry Mud Terrains but quiet tame for Muds they are inbetween MT and AT fANTASTIC TYRE in the wet dry and for lanes only changing them for a more chunky look.  must say never let me down, if your interested will let the five go with Mods for 250 quid can supply photos.. if you want.
