On your desk top, right click on 'my computer' then on 'properties'. This brings up a window that has several tabs on it, one of which is hardware. Click on that and find the sound card on the list. Clicking on that or double clicking will bring up the details and an option to update the driver.
I tell everyone I know who's having trouble with their PC to buy a Mac. They're quicker than PCs, never get viruses (cos the geeks don't write viruses for them), don't crash, take up half the space, are better designed and cost less than most PCs. Ditch that creamy grey box in the tip. Go on you know you want to...

Unfortunately that won't help If he don't have the drivers disk or know what sound card he has. Probably the easiest solution is to go to a local computer shop and buy a new sound card. They need not be very expensive and really easy to install.

or you could download a program called aida32 which will tell you precisely what it is and where to get the driver from without using such places as driverguide.com which has spyware and crap embedded into it lol
Did a google search for it but couldnt find any site where i could download the program. Im not technology minded im affraid. :(
