Customers.... who needs 'em?
« on: December 29, 2006, 10:16:31 »
Just had a couple of lamps returned from a customer by post this morning. The letter with them is asking for a full refund. He ordered the wrong parts, so I would normally refund less a 10% handling charge. But then I noticed when he ordered them...... March 2005

Who, in their right mind, returns parts for refund after nearly 2 years???? Now 'customer service' is all well and good, but there are limits

Grrrrrrr!!! As the title says, customers, who needs 'em?

Once I've stopped ranting about him, I think I'll just refund him less a larger handling charge.

why refund them. If he ordered them 2 years ago how could they be wrong?

I would send them back.

He has been stationed in Cyprus (Forces) and has only just been posted back to the UK. I assume he was too tight to post the stuff from abroad.

The problem with returning them is i have to pay for the postage. I'm better off refunding him, but make sure I take a profit by way of a handling charge. That's me with my 'be sensible' hat on now!!

I'd be tempted to write and tell him that the age of the part does not facilitate a refund. However you will hold them for him without cost for one month for him to arrange collection, thereafter a storage charge of, I suggest 10% of the cost of the items, will be made per month.

That is a typical forces ploy ask for the name and address of his commanding officer so you can obtain clarification of his posting dates - tell him it's a standard procedure

Now I've chilled a bit (!) it's not worth the messing around. As long as the handling charge is high enough, It'll make him think twice next time.

Steve, are you absolutely sure the lights have not been used?

It may be a ploy that if they were continental lights, he may have been using them and now he is back in the UK, he no longer needs them and is just trying it on.

I am forces myself, and unfortunately there are a few numpties out there who just dont care.  I am not saying he is one of them, but you just never know.

But I don't think it will if I keep making simple mistakes

Sent him a cheque for £13:90p dated May 2005 and then claim it back off the bank if they cash it.
Or find 3 old 5 pound notes (no longer legal tender) and ask him to give the £1:10p change to a local charity.

Nah, they are early Mini indicator assemblies. I suspect his car is a post 1987 one which had slightly different ones. They are still in their packaging.

Surely you really arent considering this?  Its madness, its opening floodgates for any of his mates who have bought stuff off you.  You are legally allowed to just send the stuff back in the box to him, dont pay postage as he will have to sort that at his end and also tell him that 12 months were up 12 months ago.

I dont understand how the armed forces posting works but am sure even if he was posted for that long he would have come back to the uk at some point in the past 2 years???

But even a numpty knows stupidity when they do something, you should teach him a lesson in thinking!

Going off on a tangent (well it is my thread so I'm allowed to   ), I would never have used the word numpty before I met my wife....

Err, that didn't sound good, did it?  8-[

What I mean is she is from Scottishland where the word is more commonly used!!
