Snorkel and Water ingress

as some of you may know, friday was a day of torrential rain, and like a duck to water i was loving the drive through water, it was going everywhere..


well...

checked fluid levels today and noticed a bit of wetness around the air filter.. (the red liquidy stuff you spray on a K&N)

opened the air filter and ther was water in it.. so i emptied it out, and also emptied out the drain hole, (which has been sealed up) and dried it out to the best of my ability..

also gave the filter a good shake, that was wet too

hmm maybe next time drive a bit more carefull through water..

but then again, the air intake cannot swivel beyond 90 degree  because it sits lower than the body..  

i think the alternative is to fit the cone shaped ones which ive seen on other snorkels

or see if an extension can be done to the snorkel so the intake can swivel 180 degrees and face backwards in wet weather..

You should do away with the sealing on the air box and fit the original purge walve, the intake keeps it shut but the weight of water forces it's way through, so it's self draining.

Make sure you clean the valve regularily or before going into water. I end up with bits of small twigs and bees and wasps gettign stuck and holding the valve open.
I thought mine was bu broke but on looking at a brand new one it didn't seem to seal as well as the old one. The box the part comes in is too small and folds the ends (lips) over so that they don't mate up properly.

Mine swivels all the way round but not sure what it will do when its actually on the motor  :roll:

The rubber should regain it's shape over time but if not try a little rubber grease (it's usually red) which has plasticiser in it. Smother the rubber in the grease and the plasticiser soaks in, rejuvenating very old rubber to as new condition.

mine is angled but faces upwards a little

as i said in oringal post the intake pip is lower than the profile of the vehicle so you are quite restricted to where you can swivel the intake
