Today i made a CB aerial mount!
« on: January 03, 2007, 15:11:38 »
Nipped to a local metal fabricators this morning and scrounged an offcut, Cut it to the desired length and set about making a couple of bends in it thanks to the help of the bench vice.

Once an ok shape was made i drilled a couple of holes in each end..One to fasten to the threaded hole in the top of the spare wheel hanger and one to bolt the aerial mount to on the other end.

Heres some pics of the half finished item..

It doesn't look too bad mounted on the vit..

I have taken the sharp edges off with a file and de-greased the steel a little ready for painting.
Its now hung in the shed with a couple of coats of hammerite smooth black on it. When its finished i will stick a couple of pics up. The mount i used was just unscrewed from the magmount i had in the shed, I haven't tested it at all yet but it should work in theory.

Migh wanna use some sring washers if you can get em big enough to make sure you get a good earth. Also looks a little thin, don underestimate the amount of pull an aerial can put on its mount. The 7' used to routineley pull the bumper off its clips.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Hiya evilgoat..i have got a  washer for each bolt as i thought this was the best way.
It does look thin but it took some bending..i have given it a good "waggling" while it was temp fixed to the vit and there hardly any flex..i guess time will tell though.

Cool :)

If you have trouble with the SWR put an earth jumper on there and it'll behave. I wouldnt expect any issues though.

SWR is just under 1.5 on chan 1,19,40. so i guess thats ok..getting a little bit of flex from the mount while driving so i'm gunna get the brother in law to weld a small plate to the bends to give it a bit more rigidity. Hopefully it will be fine then.
