Would just like some opinions on what i should do............basically my series 2 is due for its MOT on the 11th Jan so took it to the garage earlier this week and they have said it needs loads of stuff doing to it (i.e. the swivel things, suspension bushes, things i don't really understand!) and its going to cost Ã‚Â£620 :shock: The thing is i was hoping to sell it once it had got an MOT but the amount its going to cost is almost as much as i paid for it! Im not going to get much for it i don't think (it only does 45mph - some people have suggested its got the wrong diff in it???) but i really don't know what to do? Should i just break it for parts? Its a 1960 SWB 2.25 petrol, early series 2 (i believe it is number 71 off the production line). What does everyone think?????

Get in contact with the Series 2 Club. If it is indeed a very early vehicle, then there's likely someone there who'll want to get their hands on it.

By the way, are you sure the garage wasn't trying to rip you off? Some garages do like to take advantage of women, largely because they often don't know or understand a lot about a vehicle.

By the way, if it only does 45mph, are you running in low ratio? It's been done before. :lol:

The other thing is to check with Douglass Motors in Wolston, they are honest and helpful and keen off roaders.

That would be really good!

I don't think he really was trying to rip me off cuz we use the garage for our other cars and he has always been reasonable.He said it was about 50/50 parts and labour which still means the parts are about Ã‚Â£300. Although he said the most expensive thing was the swivel ball things and they are about Ã‚Â£50 each at AMD which isn't THAT bad i don't think. I will have to get an exact list of what it needs and you can decide if its too much work!!!! Some of it is silly things like the brake lights aren't red enough anymore and the secret box under the passenger seat is rotten and is within 30cm of the seatbelt!!!

Thank you very much for the offers of help though - they are much appreciated and if it all goes ahead there will be plenty of bacon butties (or 'cobs' if you're hinckley)!!!!

Anyway. If the swivels are leaking then for a short term fix you could try using some One Shot Grease. If you don't know what the swivels are, then they're those large chrome balls on the ends of the front axle.

The Ã‚Â£620 quotation is probably mostly just for the labour. These vehicles don't normally cost a lot in parts unless it's substantial, like a complete chassis for example.

EDIT: Okay. I see you have posted while I was typing this particular post. Provide us the list of what needs replacement or repairs, or better yet go over to OLLR. ;)

Ok this is what is wrong with it as far as i can remember;

*Needs new swivels (big chrome balls) as they are rusty
*Kingpins?? (he possibly said something about top and bottom)
*Bushes on the suspension spring hangers - he also said it could be the wrong size bolt in the shock absorber or spring hanger bushes
*Brake adjusters
*Welding to secret box
*New rear lens for brake lights
*Pump for the screen washer

That is as much as i can remember - i will have to get a definite list from him.

i thought it sounded expensive but when you don't really know what your talking about its hard to argue with a mechanic! plus not really knowing that much about land rovers it can be pretty daunting even thinking about doing it yourself! :?

however i am very encouraged by what people have said to me so far and it has cheered me up no end!! :D

Am I missing something? What's Vikki's secret box? Is that Vikki's seat box? In which case you can just get another one can't you? If that's all the welding there is then it shouldn't be a problem.

One shot will sort the swivels and if it doesn't then you can fill the deep pits on the chrome with chemical metal. Hardly an ideal solution but it'll get through abn MOT.

Otherwsie they sound like tedious jobs that are DIYable but they do sound time consuming.

I have to also mention that there will be some differences between the Series 2 and 2A parts. A lot depends on year and what a Previous Owner has fitted to the vehicle, but the earlier Series 2A vehicles (including 2s) had a different swivel arrangement compared to the later 2A and Series 3 swivels.

ok i will have to try and find out some prices of parts etc - had a look on ebay for the swivel things but couldn't find any.

is it really worth all the hassle? how long do you think it would take to do all the stuff ive mentioned? getting a bit downhearted by it all now!

That depends on what you want. Any particular reason why you intend on selling it?

This was mine nearly two years ago now...

As you can see there is a hub on the floor towards the bottom of the photograph. That chrome "ball" is the swivel, with the halfshaft on one end and the brake hub on the other end.

several reasons - it only does 45mph, we have too many cars at home now and i need to fund a trip to new zealand in the summer! its just really stressfull trying to sort it when i don't really know much about land rovers.

Are you sure it only does 45mph and it isn't the speedo at fault?

When was the last time it had the points and ignition set up? What carb is it? There are many things that can cause these engines (or any engine!) to run poor and give out poor performance and cause possible damage to the engine (such as running lean for too long).

Or is it a case of being afraid to bring the rpms any higher? :P As they do get very noisey when they're above 1,500rpm. :P

Fix it up, it'd be a shame to break the old girl for that small list of bits. If the swivels are shot it might be cheaper to pick up a 2nd hand axle and swap the whole lot accross. Come and have a weekend in teh peak district and the boys from OLLR will probably be able to sort it all oout for you.

It should do more than 45mph easily. They can, and will do 70mph and maybe a bit more if you're pushing it hard.

So I think as I said earlier, either ignition problems or knackered engine or you're afraid of the noise. ;)

Vikki - I think it coud be worth fixing.

Other options to consider - replace the whole front axle (obviously with one with better swivel joints) - could be cheaper? And not a difficult job and it gives you more spare parts to clutter up the garage.

45mph :roll: seems a little slow - James' Series IIa did 60mph with ease before he beefed the engine a bit - so I would suggest it may need a service - or a carb change etc.

I think it would be worth repairing even if you are going to sell, as I think you would get more for a vehicle with an MOT than without, but not 620 pounds worth. But I am sure there would be no shortage of volunteers to help you fix it. :lol:

ive taken it to another garage this afternoon to get a second opinion - its a friend of my dads who used to race land rovers when he was younger so im hoping he will be more of a help than the other bloke! still waiting for him to get back to me though but fingers crossed its not as bad as first thought [-o<

if not ill be on the lookout for some volunteers

i don't think she is quite ready to die just yet!!!

Good news ................... the second garage has said it doesn't need swivel things and it's going to cost about Ã‚Â£200 for the lot :D
