Help...insurance woes
« on: January 10, 2007, 11:39:56 »
I have added 15inch steel wheels to my freebie to replace my 17inch alloys and they want an extra £60 on my insurance

This is stupid because it actually decreases the value of the vehicle rather than increases...i am not some chavvy boy racer putting 18 inch alloys on a saxo or whatever!

Anyone give me any advice?

James  :(

Did they say why? Who is the insurance company, is it a specialist 4x4 company or a "normal" one?

You could try getting a few other quotes - and then tell the current company that you are changing unless they come up with a more reasonable price

By the way, why have you changed the wheels?

Sounds like a 'lets use this as an opprtunity to fleece the customer' situation to me.

I agree with the above. Get some competitive quotes from specialist insurance companies and then go back to your current insurer.

Who insures you James? Sounds like they are taking the p*ss a bit. Was the 60 notes just for the wheels because you mentioned they wanted 50 for the sump guard. Does that mean they want 110 for both?? I would ring up speak to a supervisor and explain that it is a downgrade and you are not a boy racer etc.

Whilst agreeing they are taking the p!$$, they're technically correct, as you have modified the vehicle from it's original specification.

I don't think I would have bothered to tell them, as you are fitting origainal Freelander wheels.

What a con... I had that with my insurance company when I converted one of my cars to LPG, Which gives less BHP, well told the company to Jump... they then quickly backed down!
Worth a try.

i've just sent them a letter saying that it is really OTT

if they turn round and say that its still not possible, i shall send them a bill for the AT tyres and steel wheels, and a bill for some AT tyres on the 17inch rims, and a chip to couter act the loss in lower range gearing!

I know its a rip of but its because you changed the wheelsize!. Humans would have thought nothing of it, computrs only see 'modification' which means 'more money'

Stupid really but there you go! Where the 17's original landy standard ones or after market? Just that you could say that it has been reverted back to standard!

Sadly with all insurance companies, you never really know how good they are until the fateful day when you have to make a claim.

Makes you really wanna go for the cheapest you can and get ready for the day when you try and make a claim!
