Hi, my dad's disco had a service the other day and we were told by the garage that the clutch slave cylinder is going on it, saying this I did think the clutch felt miles too light for the first 1/3 of the way down, its on a W plate with only 64000 miles, is it usual for them to have problems this early?

It's not a particular weak point, but clutches are subject to wear and tear, so it doesn't really surprise me. It should be fairly straightforward to change yourself if you feel like saving some money; I think they're only a few quid.

Yeah, I'm willing to do it myself as it saves paying the labour and also it will stop me knackering up the gearbox as its going to start crunching soon i guess???

Hi. at work we run landrovers and two of them have had the slave cylinders replaced. one on a W plate with 60k and Mine on an 03 plate with 30k. apparently there are some with dodgy seals. On both occasions the fliud went almost black and the clutch slowly starts to engage with the pedal down, so a quick jump to neutral was neccasary at the lights.

I'm talking about Defenders so it might not apply to the disco, just don't be surprised if it is.

There's a tendency for one cylinder to fail shortly after the other, so it might be worth replacing them both at the same time, to save bleeding it all again.

When you say the two cylinders do you mean master and slave?

Yup, sorry, I should have been clearer.

When the seals on the master fail, the gunk tends to sink down to the slave, and this gets caught in the slave seals and wrecks them too. I believe it also happens to a lesser extent the other way.

So do you think its best to change them both then or just check the colour of the fluid and if its ok then just change the slave, does anyone know where to get these from?

Personally I'd go to Brookwells. Looking around it seems the Slave is under 15 quid, but the Master is about 50 quid for a genuine part, about half that for a pattern part. Hence you might as well stick to the slave. IIRC on the 101 they were both quite cheap.

sounds more like the master cylinder to me,mine done the same and i replaced it and perfect now think it was 50 notes easy enough job
