Ok the scenario - stereo works (and CD multichanger) but only plays on the right hand side (front and back) left side is dead only the tweeter in the pillar trim seems to be working.
Is there a universal connection somewhere behind the dash or an amp? and if so where exactly are they?
I have also been getting the occaisional "boom" from the the rear bass unit as I switch on - is this a sign of an amp on the way out as well??

Can someone help me with which wire colours to follow through the dash to the speakers.
Thanks in advance.

yours sounds like the uprated stereo, there will be an amplifier somewhere in the car (probably under the front seat or behind glove box but not too sure), it sounds like one side of it has gone down or there is a faulty connection going to it

If you have tweeters then chances are you have crossovers too somewhere, on the RRC they are inside the doors.  Either that or the wiring connection between the tweeter and the rest of the car has gone.  Look at thw wring loom at the base of the A pillar, I had to rewire loads of stuff on both sides of mine, including the speakers.

Checked - nothing under the passenger seat and only the changer under the drivers - will look at following the wires and see if I can find a break or broken connection.

I've a feeling the Amp in in the rear door with the Sub. I also have no working rear LHSR speaker... swapped speakers no difference. Not investigated any further though I know others also have the same prob but probably don't notice as the sub masks the none working speaker. :?

The amp in the rear door seems to be working - ie the bass is  there - are there cables that then run back to the front left and rear left speakers as they are the 2 that are not working??
Thanks for help to date.

The amp in the back door is just for the big sub speakers, I know this as mine has gone duff (I traced and tested all my sub wires and can only deduce that the sub amp is b*g*ered!!  I am not 100% on the amp think but i'm sure that the up market disco stereos had one, good point 'bout the crossovers, if your tweeters are working on that side could well be the mid and bass circuits for that side are goosed (not sure where they are also), not being much help really!!  Good luck!
