Its Grounded on Branscombe Beach, I know the area well, Its a shame I hope it doesn't cause a big mess, its a beautiful area indeed.

It may sound daft but surly it's better to have the thing grounded and accessable for the salvage teams to get the fuel and containers off the vessel in a (semi) controlled environment than to carry on towing it to Portland and have it break up and sink in the Channel.
At least this way there's only 150-200 containers and a small amout of fuel oil floating around.
If it had broken up and sunk you would have had 3500 tonnes of fuel oil, diesel + nearly 2400 containers floating around!!

Provided they get a good'ish spell of weather over the next few days then things should start to move.

A word of warning for anyone thinking of getting some 'free stuff' from the beaches around there:
All the cargo on the vessel has an owner, therefore anything that you find on the beach is effectively lost property and MUST be reported the Receiver of Wreck. Failure to report any items is classed as theft and could lead to a criminal record and a fine of upto £2500!!

PENALTIES

Penalties under the merchant shipping act 1995
Failure to report wreck which has been raised (even if you own the wreck), constitutes an offence under section 236 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995.

Finders who do not report their finds are liable to pay a fine of up to £2,500 for each offence, will lose any salvage rights, and have to pay the person entitled to the find twice the value of the find.

Finders who do not report their finds may be prosecuted, and those who are found guilty will then have a criminal record.

Related offences under other legislation
As well as incurring penalties under the Merchant Shipping Act 1995, there may also be associated offences under other acts such as the Theft Act 1968, The Firearms Act 1968, the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973, and the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986.

They were trying to get the floating crane moving yesterday in Southampton docks, I was wondering what for, guess this may well be it. Was listening to the tugs trying to get it moving AND get the normal shipping on the move at the same time.
