Kinetic rope snapping
« on: January 21, 2007, 22:01:49 »
Whilst out playing today I caught on camera a kinetic snapping , see the below link - the chap in the 90 was very lucky that nothing was attached to the rope like a shackle. Otherwise he would had been much worse off than getting a shower of glass.

You'll never get a shackle on the end of a broken rope...  broken recovery point maybe, but not broken rope.

Not good news is it?  Could have certainly had someone's eye out with that.

How did you get him out in the end?  Looks like a helicopter job to me!

ill happily use my winch all day long as its easier & faster than a kerr, only thing i get narked at is some peoples absolute wish not to get there winch dirty or even get out there motor, now that ticks me off when u spend all day winching them out
ill only use a kerr on some ones motor that i know & i know is prepared for the use of one,

ill happily use a kerr but only if i know score regarding rec points etc

i have no idea about its history but driving over the rope is bad for it,not washing it is bad for it & just a note it didnt move on the first pull & just moved on the 2nd pull so  it woulda made sense to winch the ****** out,

I agree, I will always use a KERR when its good to use one. If it dose not come out the 1st or 2nd go then its time for a winch. But looking at where the 90 is stuck I would have never gotten the KERR out in the frist place.

Thumbs didnt want to use his winch cos he said he didnt want to risk breaking it on recovering somebody else - fair comment.

On inspection afterwards it could be seen that the rope was knotted, and guess where it broke? Yes the knot!

The chap in the motor did cut himself from the glass it was all over the cab.

I had a feeling that something may happen and I did say that to Thumbs 's mate, Note how far away I was stood.

In the end the chaps own buddies got him out.

Kerr shouldnt be used with a run up like that any way. If you have any kind of traction you should not take a run up, the rope should be taught.

My main question is why he thought he could drive that section??? had many managed it b4?

I thought that was the point of a kinetic rope.  You take a run up and build up kinetic energy, which the rope stores up as spring energy, then (in theory) converts back into kinetic to pull out the stuck car.  Otherwise don't you just use a towrope?

Yes and no, If you put too much load through the system some thing has to break and if its not the stuck vehiclke breaking free then it has to be somthing else like the rope or a chassis.

The correct method IIRC is to take up the slack in the rope and then back up about a meter of 2 at most and then drive forwards so the rope is at about 20% longer than its origional length, at this point you stop. If this is not enough then you should try something else like winching or digging.

I always had thought that with a KERR it was the vehicle to move away at a brisk pace (the heavier the tow motor the slower as momentum is greater / the lighter then the faster.) and then when the rope is at full streach it should exert enough force to pull the stuck motor out.

Should the vehicle be majorly stuck then wouldn't repeated light pulls be better than a few Mahoosive ones which are going to exert a force on the limit of the rope and the recovery points. So then it's time to get winching.

thats the worst piece of recovery ive evrt seen :?
even a complete idiot can see that was going to end badly.
if that rope had hit someone it would of killed them instantly.
for [!Expletive Deleted!] sake people, think  about the forces your are exerting on your equipment, and if your struggling, stop, take a step back and think of a better way of doing it.

i watched a bloke do that with a steel wire, trying to recover a paj, it did the same, nearly tore thro the bonnet of his truck when it came back at him.

I thought with a kinetic rope you drove away at a reasonable pace not fast but steady to store the energy in the rope and then either enough energy got stored in it to assist the recovery or you stopped. I also had the idea that you never used a snatch recovery with kinetics as the forces were too great to be safe.

If there was a knot in the rope then it should never have been used. I had a long chat with a manufacturer about this and he had an excellent demonstration of how a knot effectively gets the rope to cut through itself in the knot. It was very interesting - he wasn't really a fan of kinetic ropes despite making them.

David - what was with the guy in the red RR hitting the Suzuki in another video you posted. Doesn't he like his truck or something?

That video just goes to show why I'm picky who I ride with, and picky about who I recover/ allow to recover me...

I've got a KERR, but hardly ever use it (only used it in Morocco really) and certainly wouldn't use it in that situation.
