Steering Box Recon Kits - any good?
« on: January 26, 2007, 12:47:27 »
Hi, I'm slowly sorting out my off-the-road Disco one step at a time.  The biggie is a leaky power steering box, and I was wondering if anyone has had any luck using the seal kits?  How did you get on?

I know there is no substitute for buying a new or even a decent recon unit, but this project is being done on a shoestring (aren't they all!) and it's a 2nd car that doesn't get heavy on or off-road use.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who's had a go with one.

My understanding is that seal kits aren't brilliant and if your going to that sort of effort then a new or reckon box makes more sense.

At the budget end, I've heard good things about some stop leak products.  That's what I'm going to try next on the road car.

I had to replace mine for the last MOT - I went for a recon one from Paddocks (I think!?). It was fine for the first couple of months but started to leak again   I had sold it by then.

The new owner put something in (I seem to remember it was a drop of brake fluid?) which is supposed to swell the gaskets.

If I had to do it again, I would be very tempted to go for a new one!

I replaced the seal in the bottom of my 300tdi last may and its been fine ever since
my V8 leaked badly and failed the mot as a result, it could have been resealed but the box was no good, resealing can be done but you need to be confident in what your doing, usually the reason the thing leaks is due to wear in the bearings etc so resealing is a temp fix and you end up replacing the box anyway
