Easy, you can claim back all your bank charges (overdratft penalties, bounced cheques, letters etc) for the past 6 years. Basically the amount they charge you is a penalty rather than a true and realistic figure for their time etc. I claimed back just over a 1000 pounds, and they offered me 710. If they don't i can take them to small claims court, which some people have done, but the bank never go and settle out of court (and pay your fees) just order your bank statements for the past 6 years, highlight all the charges, total them up, Type and fill out this letter http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6170209.stm (other details etc are on this website) wait 14 days, a letter will come back saying they are dealing with it, then a bit later on the offer will come through. I am not being greedy so I am accepting the first offer (plus I cannot be arsed to go stump up 250 for the court claim even though i get it back) Do it its easy!

Yes, although in Scotland you can only go back 5 years instead of the 6 years in England & Wales.

After reading this thread I'm about to do it myself.  It could hardly be easier.  I'm surprised though that I've not actually paid that many charges!  Mostly the bank has been charging me interest, but no penalties.  Cunning devils.

The whole reason I have a Discovery is that I successfully claimed back over £10,000 in charges and interest from RBS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Response from 1st letter = offer of £600

Response from 2nd letter = offer of £6000

Rang them, 2 days later agreed to settle for the full ammount and interest!!

Thank you RBS for enabling me to become a LR owner!!!!!!!!

I'm going to claim back the penalty charges they charged me when I didn't pay my credit card bill straight away.  The interest is fair enough, but the penalties are arbitrary.

Way2deep, if you follow the links to the BBC website and elsewhere you'll see exactly why people are claiming these charges back.

The reason that the flood gates have been opened is that the OFT (i think it were them) deemed the charges unacceptable as they were not a true reflection of how much it costed to inform you of the error.  Also they deemed that they were not meant to be a financial penalty.

But alot of people have been doing it for months and months!

Waiting for Halifax to get in touch with reality and try another offer before I give them a small claims court summons for almost £900

Be careful as I have just done this, the bank refunded £1000. Yippee

Then 2 weeks later cancelled my overdraft facility.  Now up a creek without a paddle trying to sort out.
Sometimes you need to get away from the crowd, the only way to do that, is to get a little mud on the tyres.
