Just sold some items on ebay the bloke is in Germany and wants to pay by bank transfer so he wants my bank account details HHHHMMmmm let me think erm   NO.. I presume i have done right?? do you think i should report him to ebay? he isn't paying how i put in the listing.... :?  :?

If you didnt list bank transfer then fair enough, but he hasnt really dont anything wrong.

Also, what do you expect him to do with an account number and sort code - i guarentee he cant get any money out, only put money in!

You did right but ask him to pay as you stated in the auction. Make sure you give him ample time & opportunity to pay before reporting to Ebay as it will result in Neg freeback for both otherwise.  

As Smo said though, make sure you didn't state Bank Transfer along with something else in the payment details of the auction. If you did then he is doing nothing wrong and you'll have to live with it this time or accept the neg feedback for refusing to sell!!

I only accept bidders from the UK on my auctions and payment by Paypal or postal order. Cheques I'll take at a push but they have to wait for a while for it to clear, I normally say 10 working days which is enough to put them off paying by cheque.
Bank Transfers, no way - too easy to be withdrawn after you've posted the item.

ive had issues in the past whereby people try it on so now i am quite stringent in the description and selling criteria.

you will get contact from people abroad wanting to buy but their payment is iffy (maybe not to them but to you it will be)

althoguh i have made exceptions where ive sold to a norwegian guy who bought something that didnt sell and paid via paypal and covered postage and the transaction went smoothly.

once a bank tranfer has gone in you try getting it back! you will never manage it.....(Bulli- a former bank manager)
also there is no way they would be able to get money from your account. You would be protected under the banking code is someone fraudulently removed funds from your account.
the only real problem is cheques. You do hear of nightmares where people have had the cheque amount altered. A close friend paid for fish at the door by cheque, about 8 quid. Nearly £800 was taken from their account, the cheque had been cleverly altered.
I operate a simple policy...if im always skint they cant take what isnt there!

In Germany bank transfares are common. Its just the way they work.
I wouldnt think there was anything sinister by it.
If you didnt put bank transfare on the then listing, then he should pay using which ever payment method you you did list.

I only put Paypal/bankers draft/postal orders and personal cheques..  :?  so not sure also he's contacting me direct on my email rather than through ebay??? :?

if its valuable make sure you check a bankers draft as there are as many fakes/stolen bankers drafts knocking about.
to check simply get in touch with the issueing bank.

There's no grief if you give him your bank account and sort code. You just need to wait for it to arrive in your account.

I use bank transfers a lot and never had a problem with any of them. As someone mentioned, just wait for the funds then send the item. I dont think its any more dangerous to use than paypal or a cheque

I use bank transfer to pay company stuff like PAYE/NI, VAT, etc. Also, many of our customers make their payments to us via bank transfer.

a lot of Europeans use bank transfers as not like our greedy banks that sit on money over a few day making interest, there’s will be moved across by end of day or the banks pay compensation

giving your bank details is actually the safest way to get paid mate, they can only deposit into the account, nothing else, they will not know any other info about you to do anything else.
we give out bank details all the time, you know your moneys in there then, not waiting for cheques to bounce etc.

There are numerous examples of nefarious individuals scamming ebay vendors with exactly this kind of approach.

If this guy was posting from Nigeria or Mongolia or outer Jubrovia then I'm sure everyone would be more cautious. But what evidence has the buyer offered that he is actually in Germany...? email address... "I'm in Germany"... etc etc...

I'd be incredibly cautious who I give bank account details to mate.

He sent me the request pretty soon after the auction ended and then put in the email he wanted my details ASAP and wasn't using ebay he came in my personal email and i haven't heard anything back yet after pointing out the payment's listed in my listing :?  :?  :?

I know in theory he can't get at your money, but personally I'd be wary of giving my bank details out to a stranger like that.  Any idiot can forge a signature, so it's just making life easier for a fraudster if he has some of your personal info.

I hear what you're saying Bulli, but after a friend had £8000 cleared out of his account by somebody who nicked his credit card, walked into the bank, upped his credit limit and withdrew the cash, without the bank verifying any ID or spotting the forged signature, I don't have so much faith in banks.  Yes, he was covered by the bank, but it still took months to sort out and caused him a considerable amount of aggro.
