Tdi 300 EGR update
« on: January 29, 2007, 12:19:18 »
Well spent the weekend  cleaning the engine. We disconnected the EGR and put a blanking plate on it and removed the marmite. It appears to be running well but still on start up there is a lot of blue smoke for a few minutes untill the engine has warmed up. Is this normal guys :?: If so will it eventually clear and if so what sort of time scale :?:

Cheers

i no this a very silly question...but

and im sure you do

you are letting the glow plugs warm up before starting the engine, my van kicks out a puff of smoke if i just start it straight up..

You are right C Norman they do have glow plugs and yes I am waiting before starting the engine. But still getting blue smoke until it's warmed up. Any ideas :?: It is starting to annoy me and god knows how the traffic behind me manages for first couple of miles. We even put a new thermostat in engine I look like a bleeping red arrow :)

Sounds like valve stem seals are worn and oil is seeping past them have seen this problem many times. Heater plugs seem to make no difference at all and are not really needed on a di engine. If it needs heat to start in the mornings its a sign of low compression.

king wolf, we have a few discos, but the only one with stickers all over is the green 300tdi, the other one with bits on it is a white 200tdi, but no stickers yet!
and back to glow plugs, i know they have em, just you dont need to sit and wait for em to work on a 300, they heat as and whilst you start and run, till its hot enough or whatever.
200tdi you should not start till the heater light goes out.

youll find that the 200 & 300 have exactly the same setup in regards to heater plugs so you dont need to use them on a 200,my 200 90 doesnt even have them connected & starts just the same even when its minus 2 or 3

why are there heater lights on a 200 and not on a 300, or are both our 300's dash lights [!Expletive Deleted!].
plus 200 hates starting if you dont wait as the 300 just starts straight away?

there is a glow plug light on a 300,just dont ask me where it is,also if u need to use the heaters on a DI engine then there is other issues amiss IMO

mine starts on 2nd or 3rd caw on the handle

i dont belieeeeeeve it.
just gone out and checked this out and one of them does actually work, not the one i use much though, it stays on for about 2 secs then gone top right of dash.
on the 200 though it stays on for about 6 / 7 seconds, does that sound about right, cus if i dont let that one finish it wont start. but let it finish fires up sweet as a nut?

My 300 Tdi has the glowplug light but it never seems to make any difference to the starting if I wait for this to go out or not.

when was the engine last serivced ?
try changing the fuel filter
after initial start up does it rev up straight away or missfire and cough its guts up ??
my 300 disco in the cold fires up fine but coughs and splutters abit and gives bit of blue but is perfectly ok
the best way to test see if the steam seals are shot or on way out is on a hill, me, i live on a hill so its perfect start up and go striaght down hill from cold, in2nd gear on over run, if you cant see behind you its steam seals   more vacume ect ect at cold on overrun
or it could be fuel related, timing maybe  :?
my 200 hasnt had glow plugs wired in for 5 months and starts without even 1 revolution of the crank and doesnt emit any blue smoke, just a cloud of black instead    no reason y tho
