Painting Chequer Plate

The pig currently has the bog standard silver grey stuff fitted. Now she has some nice black modulars i was thinking of changing the chequer plate to match
Has anyone painted their chequer plate? If i were to do it i would remove it and spray it to get a better finish.
Anyone got any pictures of theirs they have done?

Further to this thread are there any 'Paintshop pro' wizards out there who could tinker with a picture of the pig and show what it would look like with the chequer plate in black?

i painted dads c.plate on his defender i didnt use any primer and i used hammerite black paint worked a treat

smoothrite applied liberally does the job. If you are careful it look ok.

If you are going to spray paint it you need to use a good acid etch primer or it will flake off in time, make sure you give it a good key first, scotch brite pad is what we use (fancy kitchen scourer) but a fine grade (500+) wet and dry paper will do.

So are you saying that it's better / tougher to use the brush on version? Does that still need to be primed?

id say it should be prime/etched either way if you like it stay on .

brush applied would last a bit longer if you dont etch as it would get a thicker coat by brush than the thinned out stuff which u buy in a can.

i sprayed my c/plate crossmember unetched its now flaked in places and the jet wash also takes it of

Aluminium will not take paint if it has started anodising. You need to remove the oxide in order to get down to the base metal. You can also get a special stain that you paint onto bare aluminium and when it anodises the layer of oxide will protect the colour.

Hammerite will work because it contains a reducing agent. It is designed to be painted directly onto Iron Oxide after all. :lol:
