Tracking / steering
« on: February 09, 2007, 14:14:14 »
The steering on my TD5 is slightly out. The dealer assured me that the tracking had been checked but as I drive I am having to hold the steering wheel very slightly to the right to keep straight. If I let go of the wheel it (the wheel) straightens up and the car slowly moves to the left.

It's booked in with the dealer again as I noticed it on the test drive and asked for it to be fixed, however it would be interesting to know what may be causing it (ignoring the obvious that they didn't actually do anything to the tracking), so if anyone has any thoughts it would be useful to go armed with a bit of knowledge so that the dealer thinks I might know what I'm talking about - they hate that :)

One possibility could be if one tyre is softer than the other it can make quite a differeance causing the vehicle to pull to one side.

But definitely not the tracking, the front end is a live beam axle, so it's not the same as driving a car.

im gonna disagree with you there, setting the tracing to paralell & resetting the draglink 99.9% o the time will make it square up n drive straight

my disco pulled to left, got the tracking set, now its fine.
could be other gremlins though.
if they dont sort it i would get another garage to check tracking.
ivehad wheels balanced several times after a new tyre fitted only to go elsewere and get it balanced and that sorted that out.

Steering swivel bearings loose wheel bearing can also cause pull to left is you are running different treads on the front this may also cause this.  But it may also be a trailing arm bush on the rear, slight alignment error on the a-frame posibility.

I'd agree that a poorly tracked car would make it succeptible to other problems, like un matched tyres, dragging brakes etc.

OK got it back today and all is now as it should be. The dealer couldn't fix it so took it to Guy Salmon in Chesterfield who did the business. I think they had to align each wheel in some way, which sounds like a complex tracking procedure to me.

Next job is to get a second key and alarm fob as it only came with one and they can't find who lost it.
