Disco 300tdi rear prop problems.
« on: February 15, 2007, 21:58:36 »
Appologies if this subject has already been covered.
My mate phoned me to ask my advice about what to do about his rear prop. You know the one. The one with the stupid rubber coupling at the diff end instead of the universal joint.
The usual thing has happened again & the rubber coupling has collapsed & my mate is getting sick of replacing it.
Does anyone know how to change the coupling for a UJ  :?:  Or can you change the complete prop for one off a different Land Rover :?:

I believe it's as simple as removing the 3 bolt prop flange off the diff and replacing for a 4 bolt prop flange and fitting a 200 Disco prop.
Hardest part I think is getting the peg out of the 3 bolt flange.

But is it actually a step forward or backward? Someone must have thought the rubber thing was a good idea (over a uj)?

I had only replaced the rear rubber coupler once in about 3 years before lifting the suspension, it's every 6 months now

I suspect it was a cost saving, just like those stupid plastic plugs in Disco II diffs.  Save a few pence on the build costs, and pass the cost on to the customers who keep having to replace the shoddy part.

That said, I've never had any problems with my rubber ring.  8)

When you replace it check that the cetre spigot is a tight fit, if it isn't a bit of a sod to put on then the centre bush needs replacing too, that's why mine lasted less than a year

It was starting to tear though, pattern part :?

Fitted a GKN this time, had the prop balanced too, perfect now :D

BTW, is anyone 100% sure which way round the rubber ring goes, does it crush the thick bits or the thin bits?

I think that is why my mates "rubber ring" needs replacing often. He did lift the suspension last year. :)
