Free wheel hubs

[LP32]

Hi new here but hope you can help?

I have a Vit and one free wheel hub wont shift between lock and un-lock although the other turns no problem.

The hub thats stuck is in lock the qustion is how do I free it up or is it shot?

hi m8 unbolt it from ur hub and strip down it maybe that they mechanisum has twisted or has siezed up duue to lack of grease
can be made to work if your lucky

I assume you just remove the alen bolts that can be seen( on the end) and Wd and re-grease. That said if its locked I am not fussed would just like it to work. Thanks for the quick response

id totally remove the whole hub of your wheel to see wots going on
if the centre trister bit dont move after a clean or dunkin in derv DONT force it as it will snap if to much pressure is applyed

I have just done mine on the Vit, cleaned and re-greased, bit tricky getting it all back in with all the grease though, just make sure the springs line up on twister to spline as this is what dissengages the drive when you turn it to free........Not difficult to do at all.......I am going to drill and tap some 6mm holes in the 410 hub twister's so I can fit grease nipples

I must admit that I sometimes have to resort to using a pair of plyers on mine when they haven't been moved for a while so perhaps a strip down is overdue  :?  :?

You should engage them for a few miles every couple of hundred miles just to keep all yours bits lubed....ooh err

Hi,if you mark the end cap and the outer with a dob of lined up paint before you remove it saves all the fiddling about when you reassemble.Dont pack them with grease as it will just make them stick a good smear of oil is usualy enough.hope this helps.

As for not packing them with grease, well, oil wont last 2 minutes, and as the book says pack with grease, thats what I done.
If you carry a spider type wheel brace, cut a wide slot in one of the sockets that dont get used and you have an instant tool for stiff twisters that shouldnt get lost........

Thanks for the tips. but after looking more and more I am maybe thinking of Auto hubs? are they worse or better than manual. What sort of price am I looking at. The bug is starting to bite. :shock:

   my shiny new alloys have chromed centres  and look pants without them so i want to swap from manual to auto

Well I have been squirting WD into the for a week and the twister has now decided it will move. The bad news is that when it does it moves very easy and you can't here anyhing mechanical happening. so I jacked the wheels and turned by hand. The side that was working no problem. locks and unlocks. The side freed with WD remains in lock even when the twister is turned so I guess someone has beat me and already snapped the twister :( . Or could the internals still be seized.

take it off its most likely the gear set has locked into the shaft and pull off the retaining spring easy job to sort
just a matter of pushing the spring into the ring gear resess
as long as the ring gear aint welded it self to the halfshaft but you wont no till you take it apart

Well today I got a chance to remove the hub. its not snapped or stuck, someone has done better than that. There is no clutch or anything like behind the end cap, just a length of radiator hose or the like,I guess just to keep it in lock and stop the free wheel. So now on the lookout for a hub. I have been to the local scrap yard and my qusteion is what other hubs from what other vehicles will fit. They wanted £70 for a pair of untested Diahatsu auto hubs. Thanks

Our local didnt spot the pair that I had in my hand were freewheelers :) £20 for the pair. Work a treat too.

I've heard that the auto hubs cause problems in the constant forward/reverse  of extreme off roading.  Is this accurate?

Reading what the label said on my t-case I could see that making sense, someone must have tried em though.
