Just sold an item via ebay, and the guy wants me to ship it to his mate working in Nigeria (West Africa). I know a lot of people state no shipping to Nigeria, but was wondering why that was? The guy has a registered address in the UK, so I’ve offered to send it there only when the payment has cleared.

Does this sound like a scam?

Yes, almost certainly.  How is he paying?  If it's any way other than cash, then forget it.

Has he made any references to a shipping agent or bankers draft?

If so, blow him out, he's a scammer.

The address isn't in North London/Essex border is it?
They use an address there alot, Barking I think.

They use bankers drafts/Cheques that will clear in your account before being cleared at the other end.

They bounce at the other end and you'll get caught with the bill minus whatever you sold.

What did you sell out of interest?

Just had an email from ebay;

“The results of the following listings have been cancelled due to bidding activity that took place without the account owner's authorisation”

Well and truly a SCAM! Now I have to list the item all over again!

You could offer it to the next highest bidder if you don't want to relist. There should be a link in your 'My Ebay' for a 'Second Chance Offer' if more than one person bid on the item.  :wink:

the nigeria thig is because that is where a lot of the scammers are based so most ebabyers stay well clear from anyone from thatcountry, have you reported him to ebay yet?

If you read the thread......

you'll note that he doesn't know who the person is because they're using a hijacked account, apart from that, as the SCAM email came from eBAY i'll have £50 that they already know! just a hunch.

The item was only on there for a few hours! I haven’t reported the guy to ebay, I guess it’s not his fault that his account was hacked. I’ve re-listed the item and put no bids from Nigeria. Lesson learnt, and no harm done.

Its scary how someone can hack your account, a while a go I had emails requesting details on a Ford mustang that I was selling? When I checked my ebay account…there it was! A 1963 Ford Mustang (or something like that), located in the US, that I apparently had for sale!

You know you can lock your auction to "Bidders only from the areas I post too" don't you?

I only accept bidders from the UK so people registered as from outside the UK don't get the chance to bid.
Doesn't help if they have hi-jacked an account, but I also state in the wording of the auction "UK bidders only", I only post to the UK, I never set a "Buy-it-now" on there either and state that I will not close the auction early.
Seems to have kept the unwanteds away so far.  :wink:

we sold a car for 3500 on a buy it know price the guy came down from wales on train to notts to pick it up without seeing it!

I got a nasty E-mail off a guy from France once asking why I wouldnt sell my item to anyone outside the UK,he asked if I could post it to his son down south where he could collect it from,I asked would it not be better if his son bid on it and he returned with a very nasty e mail telling me I shouldn't be allowed to do that and it was my loss and would loose bidders like that  :?:  :?:  :?:  go figure that one

Be VERY carefull out there people

As my Dad once told me "Son,the world is FULL of trickery and scams and people wanting to make a quick pound or two out of ya" How true he is

I had that happen to me, luckily a guy e-amiled me as he was confused, the Merc was in the states but I was in the uk, so where was the car?

I replied "probably still on the drive of the guy who owns it".  Within the hour my e-mails were being redirected too so I couoldn't get into my account or anything but this first guy was great and helped me get sorted with E-Bay, lucky for me, and it was all over in 4 hours.

I can't comprehend how someone will go to this mouch trouble to nick stuff, wouldn't it be easier just to get a job :evil:

Can I assume that they hijack your Paypal account too then?

I closed mine down (paypal) and just keep my eblag account open for window shopping.
Sometimes if I actually like something I'll contact the seller though the "ask seller a question" link.

Am i still at risk?

In my case it was only my ebay account, thank God it wasnt by PayPall account too. But I did change all the passwords etc!
