Rangie fixed but....... ign light on....
« on: February 27, 2007, 18:19:22 »
Right some of you may no the elecs shorted out the weekend and battery caught fire etcetc...

just managed to fix it tonight with a new battery new accel cable and 3 new earth straps.

earth straps i have put from driverside turret mount bolt to pulley mount bolt.
from passenger side inner wing to a lower bolt on the front of engine
and last one from battery neg to turret bolt on pass side.

all seems ok starts at the turn of the key and all elec working and no smoke :)

BUT.............................

The ignition light stays illuminated after start up???

it dims very slightly on tick over then as soon as you rev slightly it goes back bright ( but litterally very slight change)

just before everything shoted out the weekend the ignition light was flickering on and off i just hope i dont still have a elec fault.

Any ideas???

Sorry for the long post. :)

just a new alternator then?

hopefully anyway.

better then searching through the whole electric system to find a problem.

Try a multimeter on the battery to see if it still charging, mine would still work even when the light was on. Turned out to be a faulty diode in the alternator so wasnt urgent.
You could also try wiring a bulb directly to the terminal for the warning light to check it not damaged wiring?

Given what else has happened I'd not be surprised if the alternator was damaged at the same time as the rest of it.

It's possible it is still charging but it needs repair at some point.

do you know anyone whom you can swap the alternator with to check it is that before buying a new one, might cost you a pint but worth a try.

well it seems better today after driving it a bit but also the belt is quite slack and cant adjust it any further due to the alternator fan hitting the pas box if i did.

So just ordered a new belt which will be down tomorrow so hopefully that will fix it.

But now the handbrake aint working it one thing after another :(

Not wishing to state the obvious here but has the little blue/black wire on the back of the alternator come adrift/been frazzled  :?:  :?:,its the one that powers the field coils I think  :?:  :?: and creates the red light

Had similar fault a while ago, was a weak brush spring in the alternator, a bit fiddly but cheap and easy repair, worth looking at,
