Some pics from the Scottish Motor Sport Show
« on: February 28, 2007, 21:43:32 »
Here's a few pics I took at the off road course of the SMSS held last weekend in Lanark
The off road section was run by the Scottish Land Rover Owners Club and they had there marquee there
Sadly, despite several attempts, no-one seemed particularly interested in talking to the public - they all seemed to pre-occupied with themselves
Didn't spoil a good day out mind you !
The nice part of living in a small town is that when I don't know what I am doing, someone else does

If this is really the case, its a real pity.  This show was an excellent opportunity to show 'our' sport off to the general public.  Its often easy to mistake shyness for disinterest, but in the public arena you really need to make an effort to make contact with folk.

I was a member of the Scottish LROC too, but I'm not now as I live too far away to attend any events!  Still got some good friends in the club.

We really need to work at this stuff better as a sport - its all too easy to become cliquey!

I was also a member but due to working night shift I was unable to attend the driving days. Although I was still interested in the club magazine and I viewed a few RTV events but the same thing happened, no-one would speak to you. When the annual membership came round they usally sent out a reminder then that stopped and your membership lapsed. I took it that they didn't want you in the club as you did not attend any events.
had a 90 hard top till it fell on it's head. Now have a 110 CSW

Well I'm afraid as far as I am concerned it is true Henry - a real shame too
I know people like Sandy work really hard on the green road run and Grant & co on the competition side
Bottom line for me was they had a fantastic opportunity to boost the interest/membership with over 20,000 people attending over the weekend
Their marquee looked good, with flyers and leaflets too
I stood with my son reading a leaflet for 5 mins, while catching a few eyes of the SLROC members - not one took the opportunity to come and chat
Can I also add I was wearing a Land Rover baseball cap and mud club polo shirt at the time !
If that's not enough of a clue that I have an interest in Land Rovers then what is !
Maybe I just smell !
As sleepy straven says they don't really go out of their way to talk to you at events either - its a blooming shame and something they should redress quickly - every club needs fresh blood
I don't think the long term problems with their website helped either mind you

That is a real shame - I think you dropped enough hints to be embraced.

As I say going out of your way to speak to people outside your own comfort zone, doesn't come naturally to some people, but it is a real pity to go to all that effort and not to really embrace anyone who shows an interest.  Its also sometimes difficult to judge when to approach or be approached, but it sounds like you were definitely worth a punt!

I hope that I am always approachable or do the approaching when appropriate when I am manning stands for the BORC, Hillrallies or BajaGB.

Web sites are always hard because they take alot of effort - but a good web presence is vital these days.  Another reason why they need new blood.

Anyone mind if I draw their committee's attention to this thread?
