just watching the news and it seems to be messing up quite alot of car's!!!

any one been caught out here.

Quinton wilson now on news saying if you own a range rover don't drive it as the ecu may becoe affected then thousands of pounds!!!

Probably wouldn't give a 2.25 any trouble.  :lol: This is why I dislike all these modern engines that are so intolerant of poor fuel.  :(

Na, it's the retail outlet who pay for your repairs. As Quinton said on ITV News, it's not 'fit for purpose' therefore shouldn't be sold and is the petrol stations fault.
They, in turn, can claim back from their suppliers.

This just goes to prove what happens when you rely too much on electronics!  :lol:

Not yet but its gonna be a pain in the ass if i cant fill up over the weekend.. not sure it will go down well monday morning if i cant get to work.

Can't see how bad fuel can break an electronic brain ;-) All bad fuel can do is break the sensors in the exhaust. It appears to be affecting french cars more than anything else however....

It's not really bad fuel just bad electronics that the car manufacturers won't admit to.

Just think if they wont run on this so-called bad fuel how are these vehicles going to manage in third world countries?

Tainted petrol probe under way

The hunt is on for the source of contaminated fuel after thousands of cars began grinding to a halt.

Tesco and Morrisons denied that their supplies have been affected after an investigation was launched by Trading Standards officers.

Motorists who filled up with the tainted fuel said their vehicles had been juddering, misfiring and suffering a loss of power.

The UK Petroleum Industry Association, the trade association representing the nine main oil refining companies operating in the UK, stressed it was not a country-wide issue.

In a statement, it said it was aware of reports about "exhaust sensor failure" among cars in a geographic area covering London, and parts of east and south east England.

But it continued: "The problem is not thought to be widespread and we have no reports of quality issues with petrol supplied from UK refineries.

"Reports received from motoring organisations and other sources indicates that the source may be a batch of fuel supplied to some large independent retail sites."

Still no sing of the actual problem yet then?

Last night there was utterings that is was donw to ethanol contamination. Which wouldn't be nice.
1) It rots anything not made of stainless (tanks, lines, sensors)
2) The e-flux (exhaust gas) is very corrosive and would erode sensers in the exhaust system very quickly.

However, no confirmation of the actual cause yet, but some dodgy fuel is more dodgy than others.

Would be nice to know what the problem is (and a few simple chemistry tests should establish that in a matter of minutes  :?  )

The reports only suspected ethanol, so I wouldn't put too much faith in the rumour.

......so far.

There's a lot of other chemicals it could be. Lets just say I'm watching with interest.

Me too, I've heard that it's the Lambda senosor, or more correctly the Heated Exhaust Gas Oxegen sensor, which IIRC means it detects the inverse of Lambda :?

Anyway, those things don't work if they aren't hot and mostly are internally heated, so any corrosive chemical in the exhaust will have a field day there won't it.  i canonly imagine it will damage the ECU if the sensor shorts out, but surely the ECU is designed to cope with this as a possibly fault :?:

Of course it won't be.  If it was, think of the millions of pounds car manufacturers would lose out in not having to replace these ECUs!  :?

It looks like its mostly newer electronic controlled vehicles that are suffering, anybody with an older non electronic sensoring vehicle, that uses a carb had any problems, not heard anything about that side

Mind you the old series landys can run on virtually anything :lol:

I filled up at Tesco on Mon, on and off I've had :

Code 3F (Front Knock Sensor)
Code 14 (O2 sensor over-range)
Code 12 (Remap in progress)
And its just felt wrong. I've had it before on two ocasions, one was getting a tankful of water (Cheers Safeway) and what seemed like dodgey Shell fuel.

Filled up on BP Ultimate and it SEEMS to have gone away.

I was caught by bad fuel at Morrisons a year ago. Crud in the diesel blocked all the lines and cost me over £300 to clear the problem.

I now only buy fuel from Esso or BP.

It's a non-issue, because these vehicles aren't going to run in 3rd world countries.  We passed a broken down Nissan Something in Morocco which didn't like the fuel, but everybody else was perfectly happy because they were driving around in old battered cars.

Up until recently, Land Rover were making as many 300Tdi Defenders as TD5s, for the export markets which demand simple, reliable engines and don't care about emissions.

Autotechnic confirmed this this morning for me. After allowing my o2 sensor to cool down from umpteem billion dgrees C the engineer dunked it in something to clean it iff, dried it and slammed it back in, where it worked again for 5 mins before disentegrating. Seems its 12 years overdue replacement. Ho-Hum, £35 poorer and instructions to just use the rest of the fuel as its all hype anyway and takes a partly dead sensor to suffer from the problem anyway.

Also did me knock sensors at the same time (unrelated)

Then I got robbed at the post office (Car owners fine, sorry Tax)

They said yes, they have seen a few more cars than normaly and a few with damaged o2 sensors but a lot of it is hysteria. Aparently you only need worry if the sensor is already choked up and then its iffy.

on and off over the pass year tesco at loughbrough has had this problem . the wifes friends micra was playing up after filling up from there  then died. change  plugs/fuel filter ect.. turn out the local paper was looking init as about 100 others had same problem, they say it was water in the petrol. :x
