demountable winch system
« on: March 01, 2007, 16:35:16 »
Ok here's one for you, a friend of mine is looking for a demountable 9,000 lbs winch unit that can be stored in the vehicle, taken out and mounted either front or rear as required, plugged into a local power connection on the front or back of the motor

any ideas?

i saw a similar thing on an american website a few weeks ago, ill try and find it again.. think it was called portawinch or portapull....

Basically it was a winch on a plate with a shackel on each corner and two handles on each side.... then u just pluged the electrics into either a prewired socket or used croc clips onto your battery, attacthed the winch and plate to your recovery points with a few strops, pulled the winch wire out and pulled away... the makers recond it was better than having a fixed winch cos you could mount it front or rear or even pull yourself sidewards up a slope!

I didnt think it was a bad idea, however not sure if i could be arsed lugging 50 kgs of winch and mounting plates around!
90..standardish

Hi Kev-Try DUCKWORTHS LANDROVERS at Market Rasen, I know for sure they do a kit because i looked at it for one of my past motors. The winch sits in a cradle which slots into a square box section on the front and rear and mounts using the bumper/chassis mounts,it's not a cheap piece of kit but it works A1,cheers Andy.

I have a back-rack from Dave Bowyer.  It sits on the towball.  Simple peice of kit and only £60 odd for the rack.  I fancy something a bit stronger now though, so I'm looking at things like the above.  I spoke to someone at Donnington about a custom winch bumper with demountable for both ends.  I'm waiting for a reply to my e-mail though

I fancy a removable mounting when I get a winch for my Defender

There doesn't seem to be much to the removable mounts above and I am sure they cost plenty... same goes for the bikini mounts I've seen

Whats to stop you using a nice heavy channel section 6x3 or similar - just drill holes for mounts and fairleads with matching bolts on font and rear chassis? Anderson connectors for the power and sorted?

Might be heavy but I'd manage :)

Yep, as well as the spings if it was full time on the front (or back) I am concerned that it would get nicked (I park up in town all day during the week) or covered in muck

Thinking of just mounting on the rear when I go out laning but having the option of the front is the best of both worlds :)

I've seen that, you also need the bumper to match though.

Although you may be able to modify a heavy duty one to take the mounting
