my 200tdi failed on a power steering leak out the bottom of the drop arm area, i didnt think it was too bad but the bloke failed it anyway, and also play in the drivers side front wheel. after any advice on the best place to get a new pump from or whether there is a seal kit, how hard to do the seal etc is it worth it. also im kinda gueesing the wheel bearing is shagged, there is actually quite bit of wobble hadnt previously noticed it. anyhows any advice help etc would be much apprieciated :)

Hi there,
I don't know the answer but my power steering is leaking a lot so I'll be in the same boat as you next week :lol:
I have heard that you can get a seal kit but not sure how hard it is too do :?:
i'll be watching for replies !!

BEEN TOLD THE SEAL KITS ARE A WASTE OF TIME.
1 THEY ARE A NIGHTMARE TO CHANGE THE SEALS
2 THEY NORMALLY LEAK BECAUSE THE BEARINGS ARE SHOT, NEW SEALS LAST AN HOUR OR 2.
IF ITS NOT LEAKING TO BAD PRESSURE WASH IT AND DEGREASE ALL AROUND IT, AS IT IS ALLOWED TO WEEP TO A DEGREE!

changing the seals is not a job that most people would recommend,  you can get ATF stop-leak type affairs, they at least slowed the leak on mine down to a noticeable crawl.

thanx for the replies.
i tried cleaning it with degreaser etc took it in and the bloke failed it, i took it to this place as the bloke is a supposed land rover enthusiast and i was hoping he'd use his discretion knowing that land rovers are known for the odd leak. its not major but it is leaking, i mite try that atf sealent failing tht i guess its a new pump? any ideas on weres likely to be the cheaest? if i were to take it in with the sealent in and he then failed it againg would it require a completely new test?

cheers dave yeh its called lr spares i think, im gonna try them tommorow see if they can help me out, gonna fit them seats on saturday hopefully, going to weld them onto the old seats sliders with a bit of modification :)

Mines pouring out and still passed MOT. Paddocks do a reconditioned box for £75.00 .

mines hissing out too! my MOT was next monday, but all my indicators and hazards are naffed, and its a reall mystery! so im guna take it down to the mechanic's tomorow, and he'l get the electrician on the case, and they'll do the MOT then. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
anyway... i didnt know a leaky power stering box would be a major thing for the MOT. i gues depends who does it. good luck!

I dont know about fitting a seal kit, I have heard the sma ebad reports.  I know I changed my drop arm rather than do the ball joint as a mate had a spare arm to give me.

Was an absolute arse just to get the drop arm off, wouldnt want to go through all that just to find the leak came back.  

As for the wheel bearing, it might adjust up?  Mine failed on "excessive play" in a wheel bearing, it adjusted but the main play was in the swivel bearings anyway.  They arent expensive or difficult to fit.

thanks for all your advise, ive fitted a recon box on now so all should be good, in the morning i plan to have a look at the play in the wheel bearing think it could be in the swivel though. but apparently if i take the top pin out and remove the shims from underneath it, it may cure it ? many thanks again

Thw swivel bearings are about £2 each I think.  I bought new seals and stuff when i did mine as the diff oil was leaking accross into the swivel.  

Think the whole kit was £20 quid ish from paddocks and it took a few hours at the outside.

the problem has been solved  :)
i removed the top pin on the swivel housing and rmoved a shim from underneath it the built it back up and all play seems to have dissapeared so im not moving it now until tuesday wen the retest is, hopefully now everything is all fine and we will finally get an MOT! bloody things !
tah again for all your advice especially tht hub rebuild link its been stored for future reference :)

i took mine to the midland trade centre in grantham behind the old peugoet garage on reliable informent tht the bloke who was gonna do the mot was a land rover "enthusiast" which in my terms would mean tht the bloke would be leniaint on small things common to most landrovers such as a small power steering leak, but apparently not. i wouldnt reccomend tht you take it there. youd perhaps be better taking it to one of the slightly shall i say rougher garages on the alma park estate a small company, they tend to be quite leniant, ive heard a garage called "sam ballam engineeering is quite good leniaint but wont fail you on silly things,
