Intermittent, intermittent wipers
« on: March 15, 2007, 16:42:55 »
no, the subject wasn't typed wrong  :? my front wipers keep stopping when on intermittent (intermittently) they go half way through i.e. to fully vertical, stop, then on next intermittent tern go back down. My MOT is comming up so i guess this will be a failure, any of you very helpful guys know what is causing this? I presume its the wiper motor, or may it be the wiper relay?

As usual thanks in advance.

My intermittants dont work at all! Rest of the settings are fine!
Can they fail you on intermittants if all other settings are ok?

'Park switch' on the motor would be my guess.

not a testable item so not possible to fail you on it. as long as the blades are in good conditionand the wipers work on at least one speed properly it's a pass.

As long as they work and in good condition you should be ok with the mot, however the motor assembly are not hard to change

Wipers off spindles, retaining nuts on spindles off, front plastic cover and then the whole assembly will come away from the body with 5 screws, on my 200 the wiper motor off a classic rangey will fit it, you just have to replace the motor into the assembly

Not every problem can be solved with duct tape, and it's exactly for those situations we have WD 40

I went to change my front wiper motor a couple of weeks ago because of this. The new motor had a different plug on it so as I was going to have to mess about I decided to mess about with the old one first.
It was easy to drill the rivet heads off the gearbox and expose the internal switch contacts. I cleaned everything up and bent the two contact springs to increase the contact force.
To box it up I didn't have to mess about with re-riveting it as next to each rivet there was another blind hole in the casing (which I drilled through) and holes in the cover plate to match. I used small screws and nuts to hold it together, oh, and lubed it with vaseline.
Works a treat.
Cheers
Graham

Thanks for all the replies, at least it doesn't look like i have to worry about it for the MOT, i will just put up with it for now.

Thanks again.
