I have oil leaking from the hose that goes into the radiator. It consists of rubber and ridged metal pipe. can anyone tell me do you have to replace the whole pipe or can you make good the connections where it turns from rubber to metal. Is the pipe expensive...... over £30! and do you simply undo the nut where it joins the radiator and it comes off.

I have another question as well.......... I have oil leaking from the rear axle were the prop shaft joins it can any one tell me the name of the oil seal that I need to replace, and is it an easy job once the rear prop shaft has been removed?

It's not really a quickie at all is it!! ok one more question then

The bottom hose on the radiator needs replacing... is it worth getting a silicon hose of just get a standard replacement.

Last question! You know when you go to Land rover to get a part and they have on their p.c. screen an exploded diagram of every part of the range rover with part numbers...... does any one know where I can get one for my p.c.

Thanks all, forgot to mention I have a 1994 Range Rover 3.9 V8 with air

I'd be careful about the oil pipe on the radiator... as that section is an oil cooler... and if your not prepared with a suitable receptacle... you'll end up with a rather large Land Rover marking on the drive/street!

If you get the CD mentioned above it should answer your question about how the pipe connects.

Good luck!

Thanks pongo_bob! I have just downloaded the Microcat and can now find the parts a bit easer! thanks mate

So to change the pinion oil seal do I just drop the prop shaft off and then pop out the old one and slip in the new....... is it that simple?

I seriously doubt it!

You'l probably have to drop both ends of the prop as on some there is a section that goes into the flange... took me 4 hours to change the doughnut on wife's RRC till I realise that I couldn't just take one end off!!

I had my oil cooler pipes repaired by a local hydraulic hose company.  Be careful you get them made up the same length, they will probably want to crimp new hose onto your existing steel hose.

Diff pinion oil seal should be relatively easy once you get the rubber doughnut and the central spigot off, though our '94TDi has conventional UJs on the back so you might get lucky.

Bottom hose, unless it's a serpentine engine then the bottom hose will also have a thinner hose for the header tank, so if you used silicone hoses (you can't get a single peice that shape) then it would be quite a thing to see.  Stick with rubber hoses, after all the one that's there has lasted 10 years or more, hasn't it?

Ummm well spent a few hour's making a device to extract the location lug in the rear axles...... didn't work! have booked it in for my friends who know what there doing to get it out,

Bottom hose took another 3 hours as I couldn't get to the the jubilee clips, anyway managed it in the end only to find that the radiator has gone as well I have a nice new Land Rover one coming on wensday which only cost £300!!!! :o

Does anyone know how to get the viscus fan off? I know you have to undo it clockwise but I can't seem to lock to pulley wheel to enable me to undo the nut.... has any one got any bright ideas??

Thanks all

Never tried it but I believe 'kin big spanner behind the coupling locks the shaft while the nut is undone on the front. There are specialist tools available and advertised in the landy mags... but I think some people manage with a slim spanner.

Hope someone will be along soon to confirm my ramblings!

It's a LH thread and you need a thin cranked spanner.  Might as well buy the proper tool from Halfrauds, it's less than a tenner and now has both popular sizes on it, later serpentine engines have a RH thread and are bigger to help distinguish.

Did I see in another thread that yours is a serpentine engine Jonnie? is so the viscous fan is RH thread, the blades are often black to help distinguish.

Yes Mr blues that was me, I tried to put a reply on here as well but the p.c crashed so I went to bed! yes it was a right hand thread you are right, I ended up having to use logic to work out which way to undo the fan as every one was saying something different. so for anyone else trying to work it out the fan will undo the opposite way to which it turns! (i think thats right... )

thanks for you help

Jonny
