OK so it looks like I am doing the head gasket on the disco :(..and seeing as I am going to swap the front axle and be fitting the 2"lift I have decided to take the disco off the road for a while while I sort everything out.
So what tools etc do i need to do the head gasket - and anything else to look out for while doing that and the axle?

can re use old bolts but there is a risk in snapping them so i would go new   if u get a head gasket set its manifolds aswell etc but if you are haveing thermstat houseing off get a top end gasket set

me personaly i replace the bolts everytime.....spimply cos i dont like doing things twice
its damn annoying refitting it all and then having to take it apart agen cos someone a tight arse and wont replace the bolts....yes i had the one person
its just not worth it
yes they can be reused upto 3 times if not more....but its not worth it

gasket wise, head gasket, rocker and inlet/zaust should cover you

Torque wrench is an absolute must, don't try and fluff it or you'll end up snapping something.
Dial guage or make your own.
Feeler guage for checking/adjusting the tappets
32mm(?) socket for turning the engine over to check the tappets
Marker pen or tippex to mark the new bolts when you torque the new head down
Piece of cardboard and tape to tape the valve caps and push rods to in order of taking them out
Second battery for when it won't start until the fuel starts coming through again
Day or two to get the head pressure tested and skimmed
Lots of money when you find out the head is scrap
Read the book three times before even attempting to undo the first bolt

Other than that I've done it twice with a regular tool kit easily enough.

Definately worth getting the head checked whilst its off, they have a habit of warping if it overheated and its rather annoying (to put it mildly) to reassemble only to find its warped and youve gotta do it all again.

Also check how many holes you have on your indicator tab on the gasket as it may be possible its already been skimmed to the max amount and wont take another skimming , i think one hole is the thinnest gasket , 3 the thickest but double check cos Im not certain which could be 1 is thinnest??

Cheers Steve

Yes, 1 hole thinnest up to 3 thickest although you can get a gasket without any holes which is super thick

To identify which one you have there is a section of head gasket sticking out about 1" long by 1/4" deep just to the left of the oil breather/seperator - this will be punched with holes.
