the only probem with DH bikes is that due to the stresses of caning it down tracks they are sturdy but heavy

hope you got strong legs for flat bits as they arent the best for normal cycling

but going downhill nothing's better with pedals! :)

True, they're always seem so slow & saggy.
Plus; what goes down, must go back up (the hill)

Digressing (as I usually do  )
I was in Evan Cyles at 'Xscape' (Castleford) yesterday & was gazing in amazement (or was it just surprise?) at some of the ludicrous down-hill bikes.

Then after drooling at the carbon-fibre Trek road-bikes, my eyes were caught by this beauty (the only difference was that the one in Evans was silvery-grey)
I could have taken that home with me :(biglove):

Oh & the one I saw didn't have Zipp rims & 'tubs', just normal rims & 'wire-ons'

I quite fancied a couple of the StumpJumpers as well.
Now that's a model name that's lasted years, I remember Ned Overend riding them in the very early 90's

Admittedly it's light & can be layered to suit stressed areas, but when C/F goes, it goes!

I've still got my (bought new in 1994) Titanium road-bike hanging in the garage.
It's a bonded construction (tubes 'stuck' into the lugs)
The techniques used are allegedly so good that the titanium would shear before the adhesive parted company!!

A friend used to have a Yeti 'FRO' & you always got the feeling that it would survive almost anything, as it seemed so solid.

And that is why the farmers who own the land that the tracks are on make a killing driving their tractors with trailers up and down the hill all day long :P

Though there are actually lunatics out there who pedal these downhill beasts back up the hills. Wouldn't catch me doing that! Having said that I haven't got the bottle to throw myself down those hills at anywhere near the speed those bikes are capable of achieving.

there's a brit called Steve Peat who is current world DH champion i believe and if you youtube for him you see why he is that good..

what i prefer watching is them trials guys on mtb bikes, one of the best for this is Ryan Leech (youtube and you'll see why) in one scene he rides down a rail on a railway line, stops, jumps and does a 180 and lands on the other rail and cycles away!

also a newer sport in prominence is called Slopestyle where you use gravity (ie its all downhill) and you have different jumps and stuff on the way down to show your skill..

personally if i had the money and the lack of guilt on spending i would get this one ;)

Have you heard of Jez Avery?
He used to be very good before he transferred to trials bikes

Then there's Ot Pi (Scandinavian?), I've seen him at the Sheffield Arena, when he was a warm up for the World Indoor Trials Championship.
Amazing!!

the ot pi name rung a bell as did avery.

very very gifted people!

ive seen a couple of people on trials bikes round here in chorley using the flower beds and park benches to show off, however showing off MUST be accomplished successfully in full view of rush hour traffic cos if you fall off EVERYONE NOTICES!

one guy tried to back wheel jump from one bench to another and mis judged and ended up singing soprano! ;)

Heh, talking of Steve Peat, was watching one those outtakes programmes on tv a couple of years back, was a clip from a news story about him. The idea was he was supposed to ride down this slight slope on a field, and skid to a halt by the presenter. Would have been alright, apart from him falling off! :P

"Downhill World Champion Falls Off Bike On Slightly Slopey Field!"

Got a DVD somewhere about DH riding techniques, taught by Peaty and a few others, some of the stuff they pull off is mental.

That's the problem with these bikes, you spend so much on 'em and you don't get anywhere near it back when you sell. Think I ended up letting my 456 Inbred go for about half what it cost me to build, and that was only a few months old! :P

SWMBO & I were talking last night & I said I'd been in Evans, she even suggested we get a pair of MTBs
So, should I get a Trek?, or a decent Kona?

I don't want namby-pamby full suspension. I may consider front, if it's a lot more rigid than the early Rock-Shox (they were terribly flexible)
Pace forks & Manitou were considered the best when I was riding MTB

I've got some photos somewhere of Avery trying his 'reverse wheelie on a MTB Tandem (ie; where he balances it & pushes himself backwards with a foot on the front wheel)

Does anyone remember his 'team' called 'Hot Pies' (in tribute to Ot Pi?) & the Geordie predialection for the meat & pastry offering?
Plus their sponsorship by Been-bag clothing & ETTO helmets, & the ears they wore on the holmets??
(I've got a picture of SWMBO -that could be scanned- wearing one of those helmets, complete with ears, before she got a Bell Image 2)

My last MTB was a Pace Research

A friend currently has a Kona (don't know what model?), but he races 'Experts' with it , if that's still the correct terminology?

But them again, he's had; (that I know of &  not in order)

Kona Kiluae???
Marin Team Titanium
Yeti FRO
Yeti ARC

Some of the Scott's are nice bikes. If I wasn't quite the big pie-eater that I am I'd quite fancy one of their racier models meself.
