Call me sinical if you wish, but have you ever thought what this site might be collecting when you sign these petitions. You are giving the government your ISP, email address, Name (or sometimes internet annon name) and address. Betcha who ever thought up this site got a big bonus.

Do you really think that they didn't have all that allready?
They can tell where you are to within about 3 meters if you have a mobile pone on you; that is even if it is switched off.

I wish they would let us in the emergency services have access to this technology then!
Especially when we've got 50-60 people on the ground, with Lifeboats and helicopters searching, spending thousands of pounds of the tax payers money, looking for missing people who have a switched off mobile phone with them!!
You'ld have thought that locating someone who's live was in danger may have rated higher than collecting statistics?

You've made the reply very easy for the civil servant that gets the job. The Govt never mention 4x4s it's the press that do that. The tax is based on emisions and the VED Band that each vehicle falls into. I can almost see the reply that you and everyone who signs up will receive - it's probably already written.

Err, I think you have to have it turned on and I doubt if they can place you within 3m, may be you could explain to us how they do it?

I don't know how; to be honest it beats the hell out of me but we get lecturers on board and have now had three talking about the security services and all three said the same thing; as long as the battery is in they can locate it even if it is switched off.

When your mobile is switched on its continiously sending a signal to the nearest mast saying "here I am". I not sure if its possable for more than one mast to pick up the signal (but I think it is) then its just a case of triangulation.

Depends if your phone also has a GPS in it :)

Also some Series 60 nokia's have positioning services which you can enable and disable through the menu system.

But Id say it needed to be on to work.
