Hello mate

It's amongst the wires below stereo & behind rear wiper/12v socket/clock dash...should have a black rubber female bullet connector on it.
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

I wouldn't say that is it, as far as I can make out you seem to be pointing to a common earth point (all the cables look to be black).
I take it from your signature that you are looking for this wire on a diesel vehicle, I only ask because acording to the wiring diagram in the owners hand-book this wire (orange/white) is only present on petrol engined vehicles?

What are you trying to do. This may help. If your looking for the wire for the fuel cut off, its the same wire that turns you coil on the petrol version. Look on the back of the ignition switch.

Sorry im trying to put in a radio, and it says that i need the orange/white wire 12v ignition feed to plug into a bullet connector. I bought a radio fitting kit from brookwells website. and yes my 90 is diesel. Where is it or what wire do i need?

Without pulling my dashboard apart I can't confirm the exact location of the white/orange wire but like I said, having checked the wiring diagram for pre-Defender diesel vehicles this wire is not present at the ignition switch.

Personally I took my perm feed direct from the battery (fused of course) and the switched supply came from the switched side of the battery cut-off switch, obviously this is of no relevance if you don't have a battery cut-off switch fitted!

Nah dont have a battery cut off switch fitted! In the instructions with the kit, it says that it is in the middle of the dash but i've had a look for it and can't find it at all. I've got a white and red, and then a white and pink-ish but not really sure...

You should have an orange & white wire there which is on it's own...it is quite thin too.
Alternatively, as above...have a look at the back of the ignition swith & either trace those or run a new one.

That'll be why you can't find the wire you're looking for. Having just consulted the book of lies, the w/o wire didn't get included in the wiring loom until 1986.

So you'll need to either find a different switched live, take one off a spare terminal on the ignition switch, or use a permanent live and just have to switch the radio on and off manually.

Remember to use appropriate fuses if you do add new wiring.

Ok, I'm assuming that you have got yourslf a new style stereo, with a red and a yellow power supply, and a black earth.

Yellow will be permanent live (need to be so memory isn't lost when you switch engine off)
Red should be switched live so that the stereo comes on with the ignition, (but you could connect it to a permanent live and switch the stero on manually)

SO you need to find a permanent and a switched live on the car.

You don't want to connect to the "red" or "red and orange" wires already in the car as these are part of the lighting circuits and so are only live when the lights are on.

What you need to do is find a convenient wiring connector on the "BROWN" and "WHITE" wires.
Brown is unfused permanent live so add a fuse and connect your stereo's YELLOW wire to this.
White is unfused switched live so again use a fuse and connect your stereo's RED wire.
Then of course the black wire to the car's black wires and all should work.

It would be worth getting hold of a wiring diagram and studying the one for your car and the one for later cars so that you can see what should go where. Haynes manuals are fine for this and pretty cheap.

Hopefully that is all less confusing, but if you're not 100% certain either try to get a member of MC who is local to you and understands wiring to give you a hand or spend a few quid and get it done by an auto electrician. Bad wiring isn't a good thing to have in your car.

NOTE: I got the colours wrong at first. Corrected now

So if i see these wires, can i just cut them and use them or are they used for something else?? I've found a plug with lots of purple wires and green ones, and was wondering what its for, and whether i can use it? I've also got the instruction manual for you all to see. I best give you just the link to the foder otherwise there'll be about 8 pictures    and the red wires is the plug that i need to connect to the wires!

Getting deesperate now may as well just go without music! And of yet i've not got a radio but will probs buy a posh new one
Kind regards

Have you got an electrical tester multimeter or even just a simple 12v lamp with 2 wires on. (If not get one/make one) If you have just go fishing for a live feed with it. Doesn't matter what colour it is so long as it is switched with the ignition. Make sure its not a lighting one and,

Put Black multimeter lead into socket marked "common" on multimeter, put red lead onto one marked volts/ohms. Then connect black lead to a good earth point on the vehicle. Then use the red lead to check for voltage at selected wires, oh!.........Make sure multimeter is set to volts choose a setting above 12V but not too far above (for instance mine has a setting of 20V which is good for measuring 12V).
To ensure your selected earth point is good, select ohms on multimeter, connect the black lead to battery earth then connect red lead to selected earth point and measure the resistance should be very low if its a good earth 1 or 2 ohms if not less.

Ha i realise its not hard!! But kinda is, when your 15 never never done electrics in your life, and have no tools      But i think i'm getting there! I've got three 12v wires now that come on when you turn the ignition on, then they keep on when the engines running. Are these good to use, or do i have to have more heartache trying to find some more wires
