Biggest tyres on a Series 3?
« on: April 03, 2007, 16:20:57 »
hi,
wondering if anyone could enlighten me what size tyres i can fit on? i currently have 30x9.5R15's on 8 spoke rims but could do with something a little deeper after beeing rescued out of a couple of ruts by a disco and defender with bigger tyres on!! i have got some parabolic springs to put on if that makes any difference.

Any help would be much appreciated as i have not long been at off roading.

I'm on 265/75 x 16 which fit and are just covered by the arches. I'm sure you can go bigger though. although may need some minor modification.

Have 31x10.5xR15 Bronco Rough Riders on mine fit just right, any wider and they would definately need arch extensions. No lock problems. Guess you could go a little bigger? but I'm happy with these.

Have 31x10.5xR16
isn't a lot different from the 265/75 16

If you are considering these sizes make sure you have a salsbury rear axle.

If you go too wide you will not have the weight for the tyre to work, a 109 with 265/75 is only just heavy enough to make the tyre work in bad conditions.

You should consider 750x16 either in xply or radial. These are 31" in diameter, though not as wide being 7.5" across rather than 10". This should also help in working the tyre.

These are two examples, both by General, the first is the cross ply, the second the radial:

Either of these would be fine, and are quite easy to come by either on ebay or other sources. Click on each tyre for more info on the SAG.

For going taller, you could consider 900x16 - 9" wide, 34" tall, though these are hard to come by, and will require some minor bodywork cutting. It can be done to a SWB as it has been done already by a member of the Series 2 Club.[/url]

SAG x ply is a huge tyre for a 7.50 they are 32" easily......  go anywhere aswell i love 'em.  To be honest if a rut is too big for a 7.50 then it isn't really driveable........  straddle it next time

7.50 look right on a series aswell imho.........

I had 235/85/16 Dirt Devils on my 109. Nice and chunky tyre with no lock-stop problems. Have the same size Black Star Guyane's on catflap.

biggest sensable size to fit a series is 265/75r16

they fill the arch nice and you are still left with a resonable lock, but if your suspention is old and sagged they are abit close to the back of the arch and does catch the exhaust so it does require a little trim

and thats with a bfg all-terrian tyre
not SAG or anything else thats been mentioned with aggressive tread pattern which will measure bigger than a bf

With 265/70 R16 what width rims should I be using. I've been given a set of Pirelli's only done 2,000m. Will they fit on Disco 1 steel wheels, they are 7" wide?

I've got Michelin XCL 7.50R16 at the moment, great off road, but a bit scary on tarmac, especially if it's wet. Will keep the XCL's for off road and use the Pirelli's for day to day on road. They are Scorpion Ice & Snow, so not so good in the summer, but come the Winter :D

I've found the XZL's to be pretty good on the road as well as off it, maybe my truck won't go fast enough to be scary

I guess XZL's are a better design than XCL's then, maybe that's why the military use them now.

XZL's are probably a better all round tyre, but I think the XCL is better off road
