As you may have gathered I am quite proud of my country, England, and without getting into politics (it's banned y'know!) and rightly so, I want to wish you all a Happy St George's Day in advance of April the 23rd.

I also want to draw your attention to the petition below, to make April the 23rd a National Holiday in line with much of the rest of the western world.

Furthermore, there are some other relevant links to organisations promoting patriotism and pride in the greatest country on earth, England.

"There is a forgotten, nay almost forbidden word,
which means more to me than any other.
That word is ENGLAND." - Sir Winston Churchill

Yebbut St Patrick wasn't Irish either...  but you can't say the Irish don't celebrate him enthusiastically.

And in 1893 the Pope of the day decreed St Peter as the patron saint of England.  So when's his day?

I don't get your point? :?

No-one suggested St George was English, more likely a Turk (his mother was from possibly from Palestine), but records being what they are he could have been anything. He is however, definately England's patron saint having replaced St Edmund around the 13th century.

And where did the 82% figure come from? I don't dispute it though and that's a failing of years of crap history lessons in schools intent on propogating a skewed version of English and British history to suit modern day politcal leanings, so no wonder really. It's not a reason to ignore things though.

Nearly every other westernised democracy celebrates their national saints days or equivilent except England, and to be frank, our need is probably the greater insomuch as we need to re-invigorate our national indentity and pride.

Just google :-)

It's a statistic. In our office - out of 30 people - only one knew what 23rd April was .. and that was me, and I'm British, but not born of the UK (I am a Zambian)

You see, as an employer, I'd happily give the day if people knew when it was, but they don't. They all know March 1st (St David), March 17th (Paddy) ... but none knew their own! So...take it SERIOUSLY and maybe employers will help .... but just to ask for a day off for the sake of it ... forget it.

Quote
"St George was born in the 3rd Century, in what is now Turkey and he roamed around the Middle East. It seems he never set foot in England. It was in the year 1415 AD that St. George became the Patron Saint of England when English Soldiers under Henry V won the battle of Agincourt against the French. The day is not widely celebrated in England. Only 18% of the English people know the date of St George's day, according to a survey. He is also the patron saint of Moscow."

I am English and proud, but also British and proud.  I served in the Royal Engineers for five years and had many friends who were Welsh or Scots and I would class them as British the same as me.

However, I am not proud of the way England/Britain is presently run as we seem to be on a route of self destruction! We are frightened of speaking our mind as we will be penalised by the thought police.

What a shame, a proud nation destroyed by career politicians. :(bigcry):   But at least good old Tony Blair will receive a prime ministers wage for the rest of his life as a thank-you from all the tax paying members of Mud-Club, with thanks for a job well done???????????? :(bigangry):   Lets hope we don't have to pay this very long!! :(vamp):

Please note that the Welsh do not take March 1st as a holiday .... in fact they are lumped in with "England and Wales" ......

Also note :

In January 2007, the St Andrew's Day Bank Holiday (Scotland) Act was given royal assent, making 30 November (or the nearest Monday if a weekend) a bank holiday in Scotland.

In 1903, the Bank Holiday (Ireland) Act added 17 March, Saint Patrick's Day, as a bank holiday for Ireland only.

You'll have to split "England and Wales" up before we get our own lol ....   Oh and there appears to be no lieu for the Irish one ...

A thought for those of you that pay taxes.
You pay for
A Scottish Assembley
A Welsh Assembley
A N I Assembley
A BRITISH parliament.
An european parliament.

You do not pay for because you do not have an English parliament.

Remember our foney friend that thinks he is president and two Jags John have both said there is no such place as ENGLAND.

I shal fly my Cross of St George from my front window on Monday.

Some good replies!

Thrasher: I say again, what's your point? Do you give days off for Christmas then? Are all your employees practising Christians? Do they all know the christmas message and references? I dont understand why a day cannot be made a holiday based on the knowledge of a limited cross section of the public, seems an odd train of thought. Surely by making St George's Day a national holiday and celebrating it in the same way St Pats is for the Irish, an understanding would come from it, not the other way round??

And a point of correction. The Welsh asembly is/has been disucssing the possiblity of a day holiday for St David and Wales  is not even a nation! Wales is a principality and has never been a soveriegn nation state, yet the Welsh peoples have a strong identity, their own assembly government, a national anthem, a national flag and good luck to them. Now when can the English have the same respect??

Dr Strangelove: I too am proud to be part of the Union of my bretheren in Ireland, Scotland and Wales (see below) and therefore British. But I am English by birth and should be able to, as do the rest, celebrate that fact without predjudice against the union or its member nations. Agree 100% with the rest of what you say!
