The pump is bolted to the bottom of the block inside the sump. Drain the oil and leave it to drip overnight to minimise it dripping on you :?
Undo all the sump bolts - there loads.
The sump should be stuck on with RTV sealant, so you will have to carefully prise the sump pan away.
The oil pick-up strainer will be evident and comes off off with the pump (you can remove it seperately if you wish. Remove the fixings that hold the pump in place and it will slide down at a slight angle off of the drive shaft that also drives the vaccuum pump. There will more oil dribbling out when you do this, so make sure you are off to one side. You can then strip the pump on the kitchen table and excessive play between the gears and housing is what you are lookin for.
