Hi Everyone, Im looking for a cheap power upgrade for my dads TD5 disco, I  am really looking at the cheapist one possible really and preferably a plug in one, possible Dastek but I dont know anything about them. Had a quick search through the site but couldnt really find anything. Anyone had any previous experiences or ideas of places to get one from?

Oops, that can of worms has sprung open again !!!

There are two schools of thought, the plug in/piggy-back device (like the Dastek powerplug you've already mentioned), and then there's the totally discreet (un-detectable?) ECU re-map (various places do them)

Peeps on here with 'insider' knowledge are:

Mike (ExtremeTeam / RedLineMike) for the Dastek and
Ian (Porny) for the ECU re-maps

Both guys know their stuff, and can tell you (and maybe sell you !!) all the pros and cons.

i had a Tunit box on a Td5, it piggybacks the ECU. with the plug and play boxes you should tell your insurance as they can be seen. if you have an accident and the cars inspected they may not pay out.

the re-maps are invisable without pluging the car into a laptop..

I think you're wrong to go for the cheapest possible.  If you're gonna spend a few hundred quid, go for something which is well designed and engineered.  If you get a crappy upgrade you'll get rough running, smoking, funny torque peaks and poor driveability, and little support from the supplier.

One point of view on this is that plug-ins only modify basic characteristics of the engine management, and are fairly crude, whereas remaps take full control of several parameters and are much better integrated.  That was my experience, which is why after 2 plugins I went for a remap.  However, I didn't try the Dastek and I've heard good things about it from other people.

As you can see from my signature, I've got the Dastek PP, but oviously it isn't the standard item  :) , when we first bought the TD5 I was unimpressed with its performance, so I went looking for a power upgrade straight away. It turns it into a much more user friendly car, and the fuel economy got better as well. Our insurance did go up but the benefits of tuning outway the drawbacks :D
Regards,
Richard.
PS. I think I got a discount from Discoparts when I bought the PP, for being a member of the Discovery Owners Club, but I can't remember how much.
