Diff lock linkage fine but no diff lock?
« on: April 20, 2007, 18:24:40 »
Me again

As it says on the title I can't get diff lock engaged. When I bought the disco I asked the salesman to sort out the siezed linkage and they did. apparently they took it to the main LR dealer who did the work.

Thing is I still haven't beein getting a light on the dash, so today at work I got the jacks out and had both nearside wheels in the air and spinning with the engine running with lever over to the left, so when I started to pull on the handbrake! guess :)  go on guess, yep the back one stopped and the front one just went faster.

So definitley no diff lock!  everything feels fine and sounds nice when moving the lever so it must somthing inside the box itself.

Can anyone suggest any tricks or tip to get it working without having to pull the box out?

If it does have to come out, it 240 mile round trip to get it done under warranty

thanks in advance :)

plus putting a handbrake on while in gear aint a good idea as its a transmission brake - and could quite easily break a shaft!

right, when i refitted my 1.410 transfer box into my 90 the difflock was siezed
my method, al-beit daft....but it works
stick landy on level ground
chock the back wheels...and when i mean chock i mean chock
jack up 1 front wheel
make sure no 1 is around to get hurt no dogs kids ect ect
now the fun bit
1sr gear low difflock in

let cluch out and let it drive at idle

now keep your foot over clutch pedal at the ready
and work the lever in and out of difflock with force when going into difflock
and thats how i freed mine off
if not

scrawl underneath the landy

looking at front prop follow the box casing back and look inbertween the gearbox and transfer box, you'll see a access hatch (rectangular in shape wiv afink 7 pins holding it [off top of head])
remove that and free off the pushrod
all that difflock is is a splined shaft thats actuated by that pushrod, the shaft cant sieze but the pushrod can
hope that helps....abit
if you need pics of what your looking at, ive got a transfer box her i can strip down to show you

That's brilliant TBST, The second bit you desribed doing is just the sort of thing I've been hoping to find.

The old Haynes Comics are chuffin useless.

Just one question, will I need to drain and refill the transfer box. I not into getting a good soakin when I open things up

Dan, I probably won't be looking at it to carefully untill the weekend but thanks for the offer.

If I can't get it working, the disco is going back to the dealer, i've already notified them that it's not working as it should do.

Pete.

Heh, found out that my diff lock is definately not working yesterday. Got myself stuck in mud on the building site, with about 3 tons of trailer and concrete blocks hanging off the towbar. Ended up with good old 1 wheel drive. Exactly the same with the lever over to difflock. Ah well. Once we struggled like idiots to get the trailer unhitched, the cheapo Kumho Road Venture ATs coped quite well getting just the Disco out!

Will try to get underneath and try to engage it with a socket over the weekend, and possibly fit the extended breathers whilst I'm down there.

Centre diff on LR's are not the cure all . . . . get two opposed corners spinning together and your stuck anyway . . . . if that's happening regular I'd be looking at driving style, tyres, or consider getting some 'proper' lockers fitted . . .

Agreed mate. If it's not working then it needs fixing.

Another common problem is that the shaft that the selector fork attaches to is secured to the fork by a small grub screw. This sometimes losess its grip and allows the fork to slide without moving the shaft.

It's located in an oblong housing on top of the transfer box. On the defender it's easy to get at by just removing the floor from the cab. The disco is little more tricky. You have to dismantle the console and you may have to drill out the rivets holding the gear lever/transfer lever cover plates to the transmission tunnel before you can get to it.

For my money, it sounds like that could be your problem, especially if the lever feels like it's moving into the right position. If was simlpy stuck, like a lot are when they don't get used too often a bit of easing oil and brute force normally cures the problem.

Good luck with it fella

Well today I had the opportunity to drive the disco over a field so stuck it Low and diff lock and started driving, about 60yds across the light comes on. Great me thinks, untill i start playing with it and find still no diff lock.

Also on the way home the light stayed on for about 15 miles down the Motorway :? wierd.

I vow to sort this one way or the other! so there!
