Engine temp issue after intercooler fitment
« on: April 24, 2007, 15:21:58 »
Has anyone had any experance of large jumps in engine temps once full length intercooler is fitted, before it was fitted the temp gauge sat at about 50% of the gauge, now at the same engine speeds it sits at about 75%, I have had the water pump changed and the viscous fan checked and they are fine, the radiator had some mud and stuff in it but this has now been blown away, great things air compressers.

Yeap had similar. Changed the guage and all sorts.

Now sits at 50% but goes upto over 90% when pulling up hills in 5th on the motorway or running for extended periods at over 65mph.

Guy at alisports said that it happens quite a lot and it is down to older radiators not being as efficient as they should be due to age.

Not fixed mine yet.

Is this on full-width intercoolers or replacement sized ones?

Or am I barking up the wrong tree 'cos yours don't look like the Disco/RRC ones in the first place :?

yeah, i have this problem too.. i fitted an electric fan and it helped alot!

But thinking of replacing the radator.. it just worries me.. i dont want to fry it..

Either that, or take the big intercooler back out!

It will be the restriction of the full width cooler showing up the fact that your old rad is not quite up to it - take a good look at the fins - I'll bet there are a fair few missing or barely hanging in there, plus it will have 'furred-up' internally - you could try flushing it with some cleaner and see if that helps, but the best bet is to fit a new one.  Or as above - go for leccy fans - I'd favour the big 'blow' ones off a pug 405 or some such - they could mount on the front of the inter-cooler and if switched manually you could bang en on when towing and it will actually increase the effect of the inter-cooler - not by much, but it will, and that will help to keep exhaust gas temps down when you need it most.......

Its a sign that your rad isnt working at full efficiency.
I had one fitted last year and it has done some HEAVY towing and the temp guage hasnt shifted.
Unpassable you say?!

That full size intercooler isn't any larger than an air con radiator. Or a gearbox oil cooler on a Wolf. They both work in temperatures a lot higher than th UK

Mike, gotta disagree with the WOLF tranny cooler comment - they are titchy in comparison to a full width td5 style inter-cooler in evvey dimension except maybe thickness...................

But lets not fall out over it eh?..........

LOL at you.
They're still a sodding big oil radiator. You didn't mention the air con rad though

I've had issue's with my temp it always sat near the end of the white and sometime's going just over it which is about 3/4 which always seemed high so dumped the gauge which was the original 2.5 turbo gauge and bought a brand new 300 tdi gauge and all is well!! it sits exactly half way. 8)  8)
