New problem - Blown Diff!

Argh!  the rear has been making a whiring noise this week and after rebuilding the rear hubs (one was spraying grease out the grease seal, other was sloppy) I test drove the LSE up and down the hill... after a few runs it made a horrible BANG BANG BANG noise as what I suspect is the crown gear has lost a tooth.

After jacking the driver's side of the axles the wheels can be turned to a  point where the rear wheel free wheels.

Tomorrows jobs:
Pick up diff casing gasket from dealer
Pick up EP80/90 oil
Remove rear prop shaft
Fit spare diff (yes! My friends have a spare)
Refit rear prop shaft
Test drive RR!

Save up for recon transfer box!

For anyone driving around with a seized viscous unit... one of your diffs will blow eventually... :roll:

Any tips for this job would be greatly appreciated!!!

all I can say this was not a nice noise!! Just as well we got the spares to fix it  8) I will be double checking my rangy tomorrow just to be on the safe side  :)

check the half shafts... i might be missing something stupid, but when our 110 stripped one it made a similar noise and had similar symptoms.

tried to pull off at traffic lights and a sound equivalent to a shotgun arose from the rear... lost drive except in diff lock, all the usuals.

I had the half shafts out earlier when I did the hubs... There was some wear on the teeth on one side.

Tomorrow will tell... I have to take the half shafts out to change the diff anyhow.

it might be the teeth... check the drive flange too - thats basically what ours did. munched the teeth on both which resulted in the obvious. you know how noises travel in landies :)

It took around 3 hours, but I swapped the diff!

Diff Removed


The fault!


Where do these bits go!


I'm yet to road test it, but am confident I have fixed the problem...

Just need to save up for a new transfer box to stop this happening again.

Take a prop off 'till you get a T-Box then.  If you want a spare I have 2 here that I know are good.

There's a few more diffs I can use around here... So thats not a problem!

If you've got a good transfer box laying around then I'll take that off your hands  :D

I'm not too worried about blowing the diff soon, the last one has done at least 20K with viscous coupling seized.

Is it bad to do high mileage with a prop out?

With a prop off, provided you keep the revs down so the cars still handles then the one bit under strain is the viscous unit, and that's goosed already.

Personally I'd suggest keeping it RWD, so you don't over strain the CVs and don't wheelspin quite as much, just watch the tail-happy handling :shock:

I'm surprised you blew a diff actually, it's normal to do a CV joint with a seized viscous, usually in a car-park.

I've 2 T-Boxs here and about 5 diffs. pm if interested.

Spotted one cheep on ebay that looks in good condition, also only 15 miles from me!

Gonna go sometime this week and have a look.  Assuming that it's in good condition, problem sorted!

It was £200 and on the way to one of my customers (so no fuel cost  :wink: )

Also has a manual gear box attached which could come in use.. Done less than 30K aparently and appears to be in very good condition.  I weighs a lot!!!  :D

It's sitting in the back of the Range Rover now and will be fitted at the weekend!

R380 or LT77 'box? V8 or TDi?

Either way a R380 is worth a few quid :wink:

It's the LT77.

I've looked at the box and the manual... Am I right in thinking it is possible to swap just the viscous coupling?

Then I'd say better the devil you know, leave your box in place and swap the viscous unit over.

Too right!

I got the job done at the weekend.  

Hardest part was getting the rubber mount off/ on.

So I still have a spare gear box/ transfer box minus a good viscous unit.

Unfortunatley that's where the money is in them, put it back together carefully and keep it as a trade-in on a recon unit :wink:
