« on: April 28, 2007, 19:14:35 »
Hi all i think my friend has a sick Pajero at 40 mph the engine is pulling 3200 rpm with the o/drive off if you switch the o/drive on it only reduces the revs by 200 is this correct, can anybody advise on speed engine rev relation, its a 3 speed auto with o/drive 2.5td. many thanks for any help you may be able to give.

He has had it for about 12 months and it has always been the same the guy that he got the car from said that they were high rev engines, it's his first 4 wheel drive, so it's normal from his point of view, but i drove it last week and it's all rev's and not much action, I'm comparing it to my auto 300tdi disco mine pulls less than half his rev's for the same speed. He only gets approx 20 mpg which  seems poor, the car is flat out at 70 mph and the engine is revin it's balls off and it does change into 4th o/drive at about 45 mph but makes little difference to the rev's, could the gearbox be on the blink.

could well be the overdrive has had it.
wifes auto does about 85-90 pretty much flat out,3250 rpm is 70ish.
20ish to the gallon isnt going to be far out.
sorry cant help any further,if you want to know anything else let me know.
he could try and find out which diffs are fitted as that could be the reason for the high revs at 70.But have to admit they arent a fast vehicle, and you are comparing it to a 300tdi.

Overdrive usually kicks in at around 42mph depending on how heavy your right foot is. The autobox's can be very finicky if the oil level isn't right (hard to check accurately too  ) and if the oil isn't in good condition. But even when working well they won't go any faster by pushing hard on the go pedal
When overdrive does kick in it should make a BIG difference if you are still moderately accelerating. Also mine will happily cruise at 80-85 and max is probably around 95 (if i don't run out of fuel first :( )
I'd suggest changing the autobox oil which needs to be done twice to replace the majority of it. Dexron II or III is up to your mate. I've used both and I could feel a difference between the two but I'm now using dexII as this is cheapest and the box was built around it so it can't be all bad.
Just one other thing. Has he checked there are no brakes seized? As seizing calipers is a fairly common fault.
