Hi all :D
Just got my Hi-lift and now need to sort out the chains for winching as this was the main reason I needed it (too tight and lazy to fit a real winch).
I know Hi-lift do the offroad kit but what exactly does it contain. It
says
it contains everything needed to use as a winch and the picture of it in action show the two short chains with hooks and a longer recovery chain to the vehicle but the close up pics of the kit do not contain the longer recovery chain :? I'm assuming this is missing from the kit, if so does anyone know what rate/size/guage chain it should be to properly fit the hooks and not to give way before the safety pin shears on the jack?

I've got one, it's brilliant but you need a length of 10mm long link chain for the 2 claw or choke hitches to climb along. 6metres is a good compramise between a decent length to winch before having to re-rig and carrying the damned stuff.
You want a hook at one end if not both, mine has another chike hitch one end and a secure hook at the other.
I did have a contact who could get it for me (cash) but not sure if he is still around. The chain will cost a few bob, especially if you want a test cert with it, it woould be a lot cheaper to use 8mm chain (which is rated at above 2 tonnes) but the kit is designed for 10mm, total overkill.

I think the jack's shear pin gives at 3.25 tons so I guess the chain must be stronger than that otherwise you could start losing limbs :shock:

Just do as I do, use a 5t ratchet strap. Lets you take all the slack out before using the jack to winch. About £18 for a ratchet strap.

Do you use 2? One to winch and the other to take the strain whilst resetting the jack?

From the jack to a tree strop, use the ratchet till its tight and then use the jack. the rachets I carry are rated to 5t and I have not broke one yet. Also they are lighter than a chain. Get a long one as it gives you more scope to work.
I carry 3 just in case. You could use one to hole it till you reset the jack, but I would not trust it too much.

Well the jack should give before the straps do so no worries there. Just thinking you would need 2 (the second between the tree strop and vehicle) if you needed to winch it more than 4ft otherwise you would need to chock the vehicle each time you reset the jack.
