Soft Side Walls?
« on: May 06, 2007, 07:13:16 »
I have been having increasing problems lately with poor handling on my disco. I have checked the bushes and changed the shocks but to no real advantage. I was about to change the spring but it now appears that the side walls off my tyres have gone soft. If you rock it from side to side from either the front or the back you can easily get 6 to 8 inches of movement which is all coming from the tyre side walls. I have increased the pressures (35 front 42 rear) which has improved things a little but not greatly. The tyres are Goodyear GT4's and only a few months old. What do you think faulty tyres or has some vehicle fault knackered the tyres? I don't want to change the barely worn tyres for it to only happen again. HELP

Have to agree with Bulli.

Pressure should be 26/28 front, 36/38 rear

What size tyres are they and what size rims?
Perhaps the rims are too narrow for the tyre, which is pinching the beads?
This will cause the tyre to bellow out and slip sideways within the tread width.

I'd be more inclined to think your springs are shot.
If they're weak, they'll give-way under certain driving conditions.

How old is the motor? If it's the '90 Disco, then no rear anti-roll bar will affect the handling.

If it's the '98 Disco, perhaps the suspension is a little saggy from the LPG tanks weight?

I'd certainly consider changing the bushes on the vehicle as a matter of course too.

I've found the GT+4 a bit of a softee too, but 42 PSI, holy cow.  FIRST thing you should do is check your pressure guage!
