Well, was all set to do my first basic punch challenge today, got there ok, only 20 miles away anyway, so, all set. ready..... steady.... GO......




Did the first punch, and on reversing out from it  BANG!!

Oh well, drove around watching the others, came home and took it apart.....

IS it worth just getting another s/h one? or shall i get a recon one? or dare i even mention it, an uprated one,........ it's bound to happen again at some point, i've just fitted stupid big tyres......  :roll:

gone from 200tdi.... to 300tdi... still with loads done to it, in fact, even more than the last truck...LOL!!!

If you uprate the Diff, then the weak point will just move elsewhere (have you seen the price of uprated half shafts? :shock: ). So, unless you've got a money tree, I'd go for a secondhad replacement. When I replaced mine, I got a diff and 2 half shafts from the same donor.

Which part of the diff has blown?

Is it the planet and sun gears or the ring gear and pinion?

I have two 24 spline diff cages, bearings with perfect planet and sun gears with no ring gear. You would need to use your ring gear, pinion and housing. I am in Bristol and would part with them for some beer tokens  :lol:

Thanks for the offer, it's basically all the planetary gears and the pin thats busted, i have now found a guy with a pile of diffs, and i'm collecting one tomorrow eve for £50.... which is a lot less than an uprated jobbie....

Hmmm, does fitting bigger tyres mean diffs blow more easily?

Like 265/75s for example... :cry:

not really, i aint blown a diff for years, even on 35" simex

it all comes down to how heavy your right foot is when your stuck and spinning the wheels  :wink:
too much, the sun gears weld themselfs to there shaft and then bust

try keep the revs down to 1100rmp and less, i never go above that and tend to stay at 900ish when winching

but old age plays a good part

I haven't recently driven mine hard, mostly gentle road work, certainly wasn't spinning anything when it broke..... anyway, if it breaks again the skinny tyres will show themselves again.....

If you need a complete rear axle then go on Ebay, communitys and look for Ebayer name: littlepinkpecker. He lives in Cardiff and breaks Discoverys. I know in 2 weeks time he is breaking a N reg 3.9 that had 113k miles on it. If you contact him before then he might sort it out for a cash pick it up price rather than Ebay listing.

I've bought loads of him - good guy  :wink:

As pointed out driving style makes a great deal of a differance (the differance between shock loading and a constat load is vast), but putting that to one side the answer is Yes.

Larger diameter tyres require a higher torque to be applied to turned (its simple maths). Using more complex maths we can consider rolling resistance where typically a wider tyre has a greater resistance to turning so requires a greater torque still. This higher torque increases the stress throughout the whole drive train.

265/75r16 are fitted as a standard size on land rovers so the diffs should be OK depending how its driven.

I thought 235/75 was the max standard LR tyre. I tried to put 265's on with a 2" lift and with/without spacers and they still foul.

IIRC the diffs used in 200/300 discos and defenders were the same, therefore a disco running 265/75 should be no different to a defender running 265/75.


265/75 will fit discos provided they are sutably modified, arch trimming will probebly be the best cure for your problem provided you don't mind cutting up your body work.
