new balls!!
« on: May 17, 2007, 10:14:06 »
i finally got round to replacing my front swivel balls a few weeks back, and at the same time i upgraded the front brakes to 11" LWB drums :)
the difference is amazing, once we got it working......

Saturday Morning:
i drive up to my mates place where we are gonna do the work, and start stripping apart the front axle
it all comes apart pretty easily, so off to paddocks we go and buy all the bits we will need. new slave cylinders, shoes, 1 new ball, 2 swivel kits, new bits of brake pipe, new flexible hoses.
once we get back, we set to building up the new balls in the housings. once thats done we stop for the day.

this is what it looked like sunday morning,

so we start fitting it all back together, everything goes fine til we come to bleed the brakes

now i've heard that the twin leading shoe brakes are a pig to bleed.
now, i KNOW they're a pig to bleed.
we adjusted them up fine, started to bleed them, and the pedal just wouldnt go solid.
we attempt to adjust the rear brakes to make sure those are ok. oh dear. the adjusters can be turned through 360 degrees with no problems.
so we rip the rear brakes apart, and find the drums really badly worn and the shoes pretty much knackered.
luckily my mate had an old rear axle off a 90, that had just had new drums and shoes a month before it was removed :)
so we fit those, adjust them up, bleed the fronts again and all is good!
trouble is now i keep stamping on the brakes like i used to and locking the fronts up

Cheeky question time, what did you do with the old 10" brake set up?

it was knackered, so it got binned
both drums were very worn, grooved quite badly

Did you manage to get a chrome ball? I think they are being phased out. I can only get teflon-coated ones here in Swindon.

How d' you guess?

That does seem to be the way that they are already too worn, it must just be the way. Oddly enough I already have 11" brakes, though can not decide whether to downgrade back to 10s.

Ian, I hope you took out your larger wheel cylinders from the 10s and replaced your rears with them. This will really upgrade your brakes, and keep them in balance.

One of the POs didn't do this with ours, and so the fronts can lock up quite easily. Hence my original Q, I need front 10s to either downgrade the front, or upgrade the back...

Rob

Upgrade the back!!!

Although there is nothing wrong with a 70/30 brake bias front/rear.
