Hi All. I got a nice Schwinn Mesa from a car boot the other day. Everything is cool on it. But i want to change the shifters from grip shift to thumb shift.

Also, the capheads that hold the accessories on are rusty. I would like to replace them with some nice anodised ones.

I just wondered what thread they are. IE, the bolts to hold on the drink holder and pump ect.

I think they are 5mm but i havnt got any gauges in front of me.

Also, if you have any thunm shifters you want to shift, i may be your man.

The industry standard is obviously Metric threads.
If the componants are Shimano, they're definately Metric

It depends on how old it is, with being American built (I'm sure Schwinn still are??), so they may be Imperial, or is is a SAE sizing? (Society of Automotive Engineers)

Sorry I can't remember the bolt thred size, I no you will need a 4mm or 5mm allen key to remove them. The shifters is the easy one :D they are probably Shimano unless you have got Suntour ones but they are not often fitted these days which I think is a shame ( never go wrong I got them)
You will prob have to remove the full cable from the bike, in that case mark the cable at the gears end with a drop of paint as a guide when refitting. Some times the cable will slide out.

cheers for your help. I can easily find out what they are. I just thought they would be a standard thread, and someone may know of the top of their head.

I dont need to remove the shifters and mechs. Ill just take the screws out.

You will have to shorten the cable at the mech end depending on the shifters you use

i have one thumb shifter for the front gears! only for 3 sprokets!

and the allen ke is either a 4mm or 5mm :)
