I bought a 1991 2.8td trooper the other day and it is suffering from fuel shortage, I was just wondering where the fuel pump is on these? Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve it?

To get at the fuel pump you need to take the timing belt off.
The problem could just be that the filter needs priming or the fuel intake in the tank is blocked, or possible its loosing pressure due to a corroded fuel pipe.

So there is no pump on, in or next to the fuel tank then? The fuel lines do look quite rusty. As the car is only being used offroad, is it worth extending the rubber fuel lines to another tank in the boot? It has got a hand pump thing on it which pumps diesel through, it will run fine if you keep pumping this which leads me to think it could be fuel shortages, I have an old ford escort diesel in the garden. Is it worth taking the fuel pump of that and putting that in the fuel line to see if it pumps any more through?

It sounds like there is air in the system, pump the fuel filter untill it gets stiffer :shock: that should take any air out of the system.
Also on the bottom of the filter there should be a screw , loosen this and some moisture should come out (water) this could be another cause, its normal for some water to be there. Tighten then repump.
Check fuel tank breathers also s this could cause a vacume in the tank.
All things to check before taking things to bits :D
Failing that crack an injector to see if fuel is coming through.

well, i have been pumping for ages and still no joy. Is it worth taking out the "in" fuel line and placing it in a bucket of diesel to see if it is actually pulling any fuel through. How do you take an injector out, im hopeless with diesel engines! :? :?

Its a pain of a job :?
Try this, get a fuel filter off an old sherpa van swap it its probably the priming pump thats suspect unless the stop solenoid is playing up .
you could try a feed to the pump (bucket of diesel)
that would prove either primimg pump or fuel tank

so take the fuel line the goes into the injector pump out and into a bucket of diesel and try starting it like that?
i do have another priming pump but having looked at the one on it, there is no filter, just a reservoir, but there is small inline filter on the "in" line next to the priming pump. Il try to get a pic of it later.

Well i completely bypassed the primer yesterday, just put the pipe into a 1.5 litre coke bottle full of diesel, it runs absolutely fine but it uses all that in about 200 yards of thrashing it? This surely cant be right, at least now i can pin-point it to corroded lines as i put the pipe on the original lines without primer and it wouldn't run right. I am going to put another tank in the boot so will run new fuel lines parallel to the current ones and then into the boot. Quite chuffed thats its not the pump, but i don't know how it uses so much diesel!

Any surplus diesel goes back to the tank via the leak off pipes to return
not used just recirculated
So it has know where to go and looks like your using alot.

So if I put the return pipe back into the bottle then it shouldn't use as much then?? I am going to take the fuel tank and lines off an escort that i have which all seems to be in good condition then put that in the boot. Reckon that will work?

Hi sounds like the priming pump rubber has a hole it should allow you to pump diesel and then it goes hard when you have filled the lines it sounds like you need to replace it best bet is one from another make as the isuzu ones are very expensive i thinlk the ford ones are very cheap and will fit in the same place you need the complete housing and the pipes and unions are also a match
