Take it its a diesel. you should have a wire that runs to the fuel regulater this controls the solinoid that cuts the fuel off make sure its on and has no voltage to it when the engine is off. If that is ok then it could be the solinoid sticking open. so that will be a new soliond time. iirc

sounds like the fuel cut off solenoid is stuck open on the back of the injection pump or as gtomo says it may be the key switch isnt cuuting the live to the solenoid so it stays engaged

I'd go with the previous diagnosis' then, if it was revving to infinity it's usually oil being sucked back from the sump and is pretty much terminal, fortunately not in this case :)

just connected the solenoid direct to the battery as suggested by other forums and it clicks when connected but not when i dissconnect it??
does this mean knackered solenoid or pump??
is it still gonna be drivable to get me to work next week ?

it will click when you connect it but not always when disconnected leave it connected and start the car then remove it and see if it stops

yup it stops as soon as i take it off...
could i just wire a switch up to the solenoid and turn it on and off as i please??
or better wire it into say the stereo live which turns off on the ignition??

now you need to check its coming on and off with the ignition if its not it may be an ignition fault or (if fitted) an immobiliser fault

I had my defender do that. I wired up a seperate switch for about 2 years.
The one night the ignition finally packed up, and as i left my house to go to work, the beast started to crank itself over with no-one it in. Also i leave it in gear instead of using the handbrake.
Nw to leave your house o find two and a half tons of your pride and joy, heading across a road towards yur neighbours house isnt funny. Especially with noone in it, and all the doors locked.
Boy, did i learn a few lessons that night. I found that the ignition had shorted, and was cranking the engine over. thus driving it down the road.
The starter solenoid feed was the first thing to pack up on it.
Id replace the ignition asap. As it is most likely this that is failing as said before.

yes you can wire the solinoid direct off the battery and use a switch to switch it on and off. just remember to disconect the feed from the igintion to it or as it has been said it may just go for a drive all by its self
