Hopefully somebody can shed some light on what happened to my recent purchase.

A few days ago I bought a K plate TDI Discovery & last night was the first time I drove it.

As I was driving the oil light kept coming on so when I got to my destination a couple of miles away I checked the oil, only to find it had none in according to the dipstick.

So I filled it up, double & triple checked the dipstick as I always do until it was at max level.

I got in fired it up, the oil light was out & the engine sounded a little quieter but seemed to be smoking a little from the exhaust.

Anyway away I went down the road only a mile or two when I noticed a power loss & suddenly the engine revved up to maximum revs, I pulled over & tried to shut it down, took out the key, disconnected the battery but nothing it still kept going with smoke bellowing out the back filling up the whole road.

After a minute or so I managed to stall the engine as that was the only way to shut it off but when I looked there was oil all over the top of the engine, on the floor & it stunk like a burning smell.

After towing it back home I tried to start it but it just turns over but won't fire up, I think its dead  :(

The Disco has done 165,000 miles but I thought it would have had a bit more life left in it for a few more miles.

Has anyone got any ideas what may have happened?

I hazard a suggestion,    Im guessing it was out of oil for two reasons - either it has done this before and used all the oil and/or the seller knew of this problem so drained the oil to get shot of  it  :roll:

 I think what is happening  - Basicly the engine is running on its own oil,( this is why it would not turn off) Most common reason for this is exessive crankcase pressure causing the oil( whats left of it) to be pushed up past the pistons and being a diesel it burns the oil as fuel,    Im guessing depending on your situation with the seller, i would see what they have to say about it,   Failing that its either a engine strip down/replacement :cry:

   Hopefully im completely wrong on all the above, But it sounds like the most likely reason from here,   Good luck

As burgerman said, it was running on it's own engine oil.

For this to happen, oil needs to get into the cylinders.  Two common ways for this to happen:
Worn piston ring(s) = Bad, but not so expensive IF you fix it yourself
Busted seal in turbo = Not so bad, but expensive

Sorry to be the bearer of bad new.  I'd take it up with the seller.

Turbo , goosed,... and possibly more damage to bearings ect , stip and rebuild  ?  or best find a replacement engine.

drop the lower intercooler hose off and see if its full of oil
this will give you a good insight into whats died
a 200tdi if maintianed well shouldnt have ware on rings to the extent its running on its own oil rather than derv

if the hose is full of oil then its ther turbo
if it isnt then its either rings or steam seals that are completely goosed
but if it was low on oil and the light was flickering then its goin to be more than likely rings ....o and a turbo aswel  :roll:

easier get another engine

I  recon all of the above apply's. It would be cheaper for you to look for a replacement engine rather than rebuild the one you have.
If you have a bit of dosh try Turner eng, if you don,t try matt Savage.
If you have very liitle dosh look on this forum or e bay.

Sounds like the seals in the turbo have blown due to bearings collapsing,its filled the intercooler up with oil and then run on this!
If ur lucky u'll get away with a new turbo and flushing ur intercooler out if its not blown the head gasket and the pistons havent picked up in the bores. good luck

afink its abit of both 2bh
he drove it with the oil light flickering which would equate to oil starvation to both turbo and pistons, so to be fair i would say the turbo will be shot and so will the pistons, maybe a broken oil scraper aswel

Sounds like a classic turbo oil seal, it was running on it's own oil there for a while.

Whether it's goosed now though I wouldn't like to say, I have heard of engines exploding when this happens.

Am I right in thinking it can also happen when oil is pressurised (through worn piston rings) through the crankcase breather and vented back into the air intake?

yes thats true, but the oil control rings would need to be broken up on 2 cyls to get the amount of oil needed re-circulated to run by itself
