Suspension lift on 200 tdi
« on: July 17, 2007, 15:57:35 »
hey up ,
can anyone shine any light on this little problem , me truck is a tdi 200 with a 2 inch suspension lift , also has plus 2inch shocks lowered shock mounts and extended bump stops , the rear trailing arms are cranked , all of which was fitted for the weekend , it would now appear that when i go over a bump like a speed hump that the front shocks are bottoming out , rather than the axle hitting the bump stops , any ideas peps

What makes you say it is the damper bottoming out not the axle hitting the bump?

Sound? Feel?

Extended bump stops like the deflex ones are only 1 1/2"

the axle isn't marking the bump stops or visa versa , and the nosie is a real knock your teeth out type of thud

I recently started on my +2 lift by fitting the extended bump stops first. One week later I fitted the springs and dampers. (Don't ask why)?

Oh boy did it go with a real bang everytime I went over a road hump.

Step 1: I'd double check it is not the bump stops first.
Step 2: Take a look underneath and see if there are any "impact" marks on any other parts.
Step 3: Have you inverted a roll bar?

If not, it can only be the dampers, especially if you have changed nothing else.

extended dampers =+2"
lowered mounts=+2"

total 4" - 2" extended bump stops still leaves 2" of extra damper

I can tell you exactly what it is..... mine was like it....

The bottom of the front shock, is hitting the axle!!!

The answer is to remove the shock, and cut/grind 1/4 inch off the bottom!!!

Problem solved!!
gone from 200tdi.... to 300tdi... still with loads done to it, in fact, even more than the last truck...LOL!!!

I had the same problem as Disco Ron, not using Pro Comps by any chance are you?

An alternative to cutting the end off as you lose the flats for a spanner to tighten up the nut on the bottom, is to slide a stack of washers or a similar sized spacer over the threads first before fitting the bushes.

I also lost the nut off the bottom of one front shock on the first trip out, I went to my local fasteners supplier and got nylocs (1/2" UNF on Pro Comps) - problem solved.

You can't really see the stack of washers in the picture as they sit inside the dished washer supplied with the bushes and as you can see the clearence is still very tight.

I seem to recall that 200's don't have anti roll bars, so it can't be that  :D

A +2 damper (+2 extended length) is only +1 increase in compressed length, but combined with lowered mount can still be bad if bumpstops arn't long enough.

I would remove the lowered turrets and go back to the standard items, that way you compreesed position has only been lowered by 1 inch (remember these are all nominal figures) which will be matched nicely by the bumpstops already lowered by 1 to 1.5 inchs.

The pro comps do come close to the axle, but unless the damper is bottomed out they should only rub rather than jar.

I missed that, can't understand why you fitted lowered shock mounts AND longer shocks :?

Yup... mine were pro comps....... the knock went as soon as i cut the bottom off, so 100% sure that was the issue with mine!!!
